About Ipogea

Ipogea is a food, wine, and cultural weekend that Cairano, the smallest municipality in the province of Avellino, dedicates to its historic underground cellars. Along the ancient path of the wine caves, artisanal wines produced by residents meet those from the most renowned Irpinian wineries, featuring tastings, local cuisine, folk songs, wine tourism conferences, and performances at the Teatro Franco Dragone. It is a stop on the regional «Itinerari Irpini» project.

Wine born beneath the village

Ipogea is the event that Cairano, a tiny village in Alta Irpinia in the province of Avellino, dedicates to its most original heritage: the underground cellars, wine caves carved into the sandstone bedrock beneath the town. Dozens of chambers line what the locals call the via delle cantine (Cellar Path), an archaic route running at the foot of the village that transforms for two days into a widespread stage for tastings, music, and storytelling.

The uniqueness of these caves is technical even before it is scenic: carved almost horizontally, they allow for the easy escape of carbon dioxide produced during fermentation and act as isothermal environments, maintaining a near-constant temperature during both fermentation and storage. It is an ancient farming solution that is now being reinterpreted as a model for sustainable viticulture.

A creative laboratory between home-made and nomadic wines

The heart of Ipogea is the meeting of two worlds. On one side, wines produced artisanally by residents, those family bottles that rarely reach the market; on the other, the so-called nomadic wines, coming from the most prestigious wineries of Irpinia, a land of three excellent denominations like Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo. The cellars thus become a creative laboratory where wine is a tool for communication and knowledge, rather than just a product to be tasted.

The organic village, the cliff, and the Teatro Franco Dragone

The event moves between the town's three symbolic locations. The organic village, a regeneration project that has made Cairano a case study for the inland areas of Campania; the cliff, the rocky spur overlooking the upper Ofanto valley from which one can embrace the mountains of eastern Irpinia and Lucania; and the Teatro Franco Dragone, named after the theater director born in Cairano who became world-famous for his grand international shows. A town of a few hundred inhabitants that has chosen culture as a tool for a fresh start.

What to find at Ipogea

  • Guided tastings in the underground cellars along the wine cave path.
  • Local cuisine and typical products of Alta Irpinia, with the participation of local chefs and restaurateurs.
  • Music and folk songs accompanying the evenings among the cellars.
  • Conferences and round tables on wine tourism, with administrators, producers, and industry professionals.
  • Theatrical performances and musical moments at the Teatro Franco Dragone and on the cliff.
  • Walks through the historic center and the organic village.

A stop on the «Itinerari Irpini»

Ipogea is part of the «Itinerari Irpini tra Cultura, Storia, Teatro e Tradizioni» project, a program supported by the 2021/2027 Development and Cohesion Fund that networks various municipalities in Alta Irpinia with events dedicated to their respective identities. In Cairano, the organization is entrusted to the Municipality of Cairano together with the Pro Loco Cairano. It should be noted honestly that, as this is a stop included in a time-bound project, the annual recurrence of the event in the same municipality is not formally guaranteed to date: it is always advisable to check the official channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco before setting off.

Why it's worth the trip

Cairano is the least populous municipality in the province of Avellino, with just under three hundred inhabitants at an altitude of 759 meters. This small scale makes Ipogea an experience different from large festivals: there are no crowds, but an entire town that opens its cellars and tells the story of wine as a daily practice. Visitors find an intimate setting, vast panoramas, and Irpinian cuisine made of homemade pasta, cheeses, cured meats, and garden vegetables. It is also an excellent starting point for discovering the Alta Irpinia of villages, from Calitri to Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, up to the lakes and woods of the Ofanto.

Ipogea — edition 2026

At the moment, there are no official dates for a 2026 edition of Ipogea in Cairano. The event took place in September 2025 as a stop on the «Itinerari Irpini» project, and its repetition depends on the calendar that the Municipality of Cairano and Pro Loco Cairano will publish in the coming months. The indicative period, based on the previous edition, remains the first weekend of September, among the underground cellars and the organic village.

2026 Edition: awaiting confirmation

No official date for Ipogea in Cairano has been released for 2026 so far. The September 2025 event was part of the «Itinerari Irpini tra Cultura, Storia, Teatro e Tradizioni» project, funded with FSC 2021/2027 resources and organized in stages distributed among the municipalities of Alta Irpinia: it is therefore not automatic that the event will be repeated every year in the same town.

Those wishing to participate are invited to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Cairano and the Pro Loco Cairano, which publish the village's event program during the summer. The Cairano calendar also includes the summer event «Kairos, tempo di vino», also dedicated to the local wine culture.

This page will be updated as soon as the final dates and program are announced.

The reference train station is Calitri–Pescopagano, on the Avellino–Rocchetta Sant'Antonio line, also served by the Irpinia Express tourist trains during the summer season.

Where it takes place

The events are distributed between the underground cellar path, the historic center and the organic village, the cliff, and the Teatro Franco Dragone. The paths are largely on slopes and have uneven surfaces: comfortable shoes are recommended.

Tips

Evenings at high altitude can be cool even in September: it is better to bring a light jacket. For overnight stays, it is advisable to look at nearby villages, such as Calitri, Conza della Campania, or Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, where the range of B&Bs and farmhouses is wider.
