Nearly half a century of theater, music, and literature in the gardens of the former Bishop's Palace in Alta Irpinia
The Recreational and Cultural Summer in Sant'Andrea di Conza is one of the longest-running festivals in the province of Avellino. Established in the late 1970s, it hits the milestone of its 49th edition in 2026. In a village of just over 1,500 inhabitants, nestled on the Alta Irpinia plateau bordering Basilicata, a program takes shape every summer that rivals those of major cities: auteur theater, music, literature, civic discussions, food festivals, and popular tournaments, spread over more than three weeks.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Sant'Andrea di Conza in collaboration with the Pro Loco «Terra di Sant'Andrea» and local associations, with the support of the Campania Region and the Province of Avellino. Over the years, it has become a small case study on how culture can be a concrete lever for development in inland areas—the same areas that had to reinvent their identity after the 1980 earthquake.
The heart of the festival is the open-air theater set in the gardens of the former Bishop's Palace, the imposing 18th-century episcopal residence that dominates the historic center and is now one of the village's iconic monuments. This is where the best of the program takes place in the evening: an intimate space where the audience arrives on foot through the alleys, with views stretching over the Ofanto Valley. Other events take place in Piazza Umberto I, Largo Castello, Largo Ginnasiale, and at the «La Fonte» mill, transforming the entire village into a widespread stage.
The 2026 edition opens on July 31st with the Refugee Festival, dedicated to the memory of Emilio Martino and linked to the SAI-MSNA reception project active in the village. On August 1st, Sergio Rubini arrives with «Francesco», accompanied by the Cameristi del Maggio Fiorentino, on the stage of the Bishop's Palace Theater. This is followed by the Neapolitan evening «Napule e Napulicchiu… sotto le stelle» at the «La Fonte» mill with Fabrizio Mandara and Luigi Bellino (August 7th), Massimiliano Gallo with «Lettera ad Eduardo» (August 8th), the Cavatello Festival with a concert by Rosarossa (August 9th), Maurizio de Giovanni with «Il Miracolo: Campioni d'Italia, ancora una volta» (August 11th), Maurizio Casagrande in «La prova del nove» (August 13th), and the 960 Chess Tournament on August 16th.
The grand finale is the 14th Book Festival, on August 21st and 22nd, preceded by a preview on August 20th. For two days, the historic center turns into a living library: presentations, literary salons, book stalls, children's workshops, comics, musicians in the alleys, and food and wine stands. Guests announced for 2026 include Roberto Saviano, Concita De Gregorio, Palestinian journalist Plestia Alaqad, and Vincenzo Iurillo. This edition holds special significance as it supports Sant'Andrea di Conza's bid to become the Italian Capital of Books 2027: a small municipality challenging major cities by focusing entirely on reading.
Alongside the performances, the festival does not forget the table and peasant heritage. The most anticipated moment is the Cavatello Festival, dedicated to the handmade fresh pasta that is the village's signature dish, served in the squares with traditional sauces. During the days of the Book Festival, the streets of the village also host stalls featuring local products and handicrafts.
With about 1,500 inhabitants, Sant'Andrea di Conza is one of the smallest municipalities in Campania, yet for nearly fifty years, it has managed to bring prominent names in Italian theater, music, and literature to the village. The visit is completed by the Bishop's Palace and the Cathedral, the historic center rebuilt after the Irpinia earthquake, and the panoramas of the upper Ofanto valley, just a few kilometers from Lake Conza and neighboring Basilicata. For those traveling in Irpinia in summer, it is a stop that combines live performance, landscape, and authentic hospitality.
The 49th edition of the Recreational and Cultural Summer is the most packed in recent years: the Municipality of Sant'Andrea di Conza has built it around the village's bid for Italian Capital of Books 2027, lining up over three weeks of auteur theater, music, civic memory, and gastronomic tradition.
The main stage remains the open-air theater of the former Bishop's Palace gardens, joined by the «La Fonte» mill and the squares of the historic center. It begins on July 31st with the Refugee Festival and closes on August 22nd with the second day of the Book Festival.
Start times for evening performances, traditionally set around 9:30 PM, and any program updates are published by the Municipality and the Pro Loco «Terra di Sant'Andrea» in the days preceding the events.
By car: take the Lioni-Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi or Calitri exit from the Avellino-Lioni-Grottaminarda highway junction (A16 Naples-Canosa) and then follow provincial roads toward Sant'Andrea di Conza; the village is about 70 km from Avellino and 40 km from Melfi. By train: the most convenient station is Conza-Andretta-Cairano on the Avellino-Rocchetta Sant'Antonio line, with limited services, or Melfi; it is best to have your own vehicle. Nearest airports: Naples-Capodichino (approx. 130 km) and Bari-Palese (approx. 160 km).
Evening performances are held in the open-air theater of the former Bishop's Palace gardens; other events enliven Piazza Umberto I, Largo Castello, Largo Ginnasiale, and the «La Fonte» mill. The Book Festival occupies the entire historic center.
