The Sagra del Dolce is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Conza della Campania, a small town in Alta Irpinia in the province of Avellino, in the heart of inland Campania. The festival takes place in the Villa Comunale, the green space that the town uses as an open-air square during the warm months, transforming a standard August evening into a collective gathering centered around homemade desserts.

This is not a large commercial fair, but a village festival in the most authentic sense of the term: stalls are set up as the sun goes down, families bring trays prepared in their own kitchens, and the tasting soon becomes an opportunity to chat, catch up, and linger in the square until late.

The confectionery tradition of Alta Irpinia

The Irpinian hinterland boasts a confectionery culture made of few ingredients and a lot of patience: flour, eggs, honey, almonds, dried fruit, cooked wine (vino cotto), ricotta, and grape must are the foundation of a peasant pastry tradition born for the great milestones of the agricultural and religious year. Festivals dedicated to sweets, which are widespread throughout the Formicoso area and the Ofanto valley, serve precisely to keep this domestic memory alive—a tradition that rarely makes it into pastry shop windows but survives in homes.

The Sagra del Dolce is not an isolated event: it is part of the Estate Conzana, the summer program promoted by the Municipality of Conza della Campania together with the Pro Loco, the Youth Forum, and numerous local associations. The calendar spans over two months, from late June to the end of August, and alternates book presentations, local history conferences, sports tournaments, evenings at the WWF Oasis of Lake Conza, games, and treasure hunts for kids.

Conza della Campania: a rebuilt town, a lake, and an archaeological park

The town was almost entirely destroyed by the 1980 Irpinia earthquake and rebuilt nearby: on the original hill, you can now find the Archaeological Park of Compsa, where the remains of the ancient Samnite and Roman city and the cathedral are visible. Just below, the WWF Oasis of Lake Conza opens up, one of the most important sites in Campania for migratory birds, featuring trails and observation hides.

Those arriving for the Sagra del Dolce can therefore plan their day by combining a visit to the archaeological park or the lake, then stopping in town for the evening. It is the best way to understand why this part of Irpinia, often ignored by tourist circuits, is one of the most interesting in the Campanian hinterland.

First-time visitors will find a true village-scale event: a few hundred people, lights in the municipal villa, outdoor tables, and an informal atmosphere.
