The most delicious evening of the Estate Conzana, held in the Villa Comunale of Conza della Campania
The Sagra del Dolce is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Conza della Campania, a small town in Alta Irpinia in the province of Avellino, in the heart of inland Campania. The festival takes place in the Villa Comunale, the green space that the town uses as an open-air square during the warm months, transforming a standard August evening into a collective gathering centered around homemade desserts.
This is not a large commercial fair, but a village festival in the most authentic sense of the term: stalls are set up as the sun goes down, families bring trays prepared in their own kitchens, and the tasting soon becomes an opportunity to chat, catch up, and linger in the square until late.
The Irpinian hinterland boasts a confectionery culture made of few ingredients and a lot of patience: flour, eggs, honey, almonds, dried fruit, cooked wine (vino cotto), ricotta, and grape must are the foundation of a peasant pastry tradition born for the great milestones of the agricultural and religious year. Festivals dedicated to sweets, which are widespread throughout the Formicoso area and the Ofanto valley, serve precisely to keep this domestic memory aliveโa tradition that rarely makes it into pastry shop windows but survives in homes.
In Conza, the festival also serves a precise social function: it involves the women of the town, local associations, and the younger generation, putting recipes back into circulation that might otherwise risk being lost.
On the same evening, and in the same Villa Comunale space, the program includes Children's Theater: a show designed for the little ones, which complements the tasting and makes the event suitable for the whole family. It is a typical formula for Irpinian summer calendars, where gastronomy and entertainment coexist in the same square.
The Sagra del Dolce is not an isolated event: it is part of the Estate Conzana, the summer program promoted by the Municipality of Conza della Campania together with the Pro Loco, the Youth Forum, and numerous local associations. The calendar spans over two months, from late June to the end of August, and alternates book presentations, local history conferences, sports tournaments, evenings at the WWF Oasis of Lake Conza, games, and treasure hunts for kids.
Conza is a unique place, even for those who don't just come for the food. The town was almost entirely destroyed by the 1980 Irpinia earthquake and rebuilt nearby: on the original hill, you can now find the Archaeological Park of Compsa, where the remains of the ancient Samnite and Roman city and the cathedral are visible. Just below, the WWF Oasis of Lake Conza opens up, one of the most important sites in Campania for migratory birds, featuring trails and observation hides.
Those arriving for the Sagra del Dolce can therefore plan their day by combining a visit to the archaeological park or the lake, then stopping in town for the evening. It is the best way to understand why this part of Irpinia, often ignored by tourist circuits, is one of the most interesting in the Campanian hinterland.
First-time visitors will find a true village-scale event: a few hundred people, lights in the municipal villa, outdoor tables, and an informal atmosphere. No reservations or fancy clothes are neededโjust show up. The evening is designed for those who appreciate unfiltered popular festivals, where hospitality counts for more than the scenery.
The official calendar of the Estate Conzana 2026, released by the Municipality of Conza della Campania and featured on the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino, places the Sagra del Dolce on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 8:30 PM, in the Villa Comunale.
The evening is paired with Children's Theater, scheduled in the same place and at the same time: the festival thus becomes a double event, both gastronomic and theatrical, suitable for families with young children.
The 2026 edition of the Conza summer calendar runs from June 20 to August 28 and offers over two months of initiatives including culture, sports, music, shows, and popular traditions, with events distributed between Piazza Sandro Pertini, the Villa Comunale, and the WWF Oasis of Lake Conza. The Sagra del Dolce effectively kicks off the Conza month of August, which concludes with the patronal feast of Sant'Erberto between August 18 and 22.
At the moment, the organizers have announced the date, time, and location, but not the details of the specialties on offer or the costs. Definitive information is usually released in the days leading up to the event through the channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco.
The detailed program of the evening (list of specialties, any musical accompaniment, tasting methods) has not yet been published by the organizers. It will be communicated by the Municipality of Conza della Campania and the Pro Loco in the days preceding the event.
Conza della Campania is located in Alta Irpinia, at the eastern end of the province of Avellino, on the border with Basilicata. A car is the most practical means of transport: useful motorway exits include Contursi Terme on the A2 del Mediterraneo and Lacedonia on the A16 Naples-Canosa, from which you continue along the fast-flowing roads of the Ofanto and Ofantina valleys. Public bus connections exist but are limited, especially in the evenings and on weekends.
The event takes place in the Villa Comunale of Conza della Campania, in the evening (from 8:30 PM). Parking is available on the streets adjacent to the new town center.
The Municipality has not released information on the costs of the tastings: it is advisable to contact the Municipality of Conza della Campania or the Pro Loco to find out the updated participation details.
