The vegetable mosaics of Via Cavour created with local produce from Pachino
In the town of Pachino, at the southern tip of the province of Syracuse and all of Sicily, one of the most original and identity-defining events in the region comes to life every spring: the Inverdurata. Along Via Cavour, in the heart of the historic center, artists, schools, associations, and local groups create large vegetable mosaics—true ephemeral works of art composed entirely of local horticultural products: zucchini, celery, onions, all kinds of vegetables, and, of course, the renowned PGI Pachino tomato.
The Inverdurata was founded in 2004 on the initiative of the Pachinese Anti-Crime Association, with an original message of spreading a culture of legality. Over the years, the event has grown to become one of the most anticipated appointments of the Sicilian spring, capable of combining civic engagement, the promotion of local agricultural products, and artistic creativity. Each edition is dedicated to a different theme, which guides the creation of the sketches and becomes the common thread of the entire festival.
The most evocative moment is the night of creation: on the afternoon of the first day, participants begin to compose the pictures along Via Cavour and work tirelessly until the first light of dawn, when the street transforms into a long, colorful carpet ready for the inauguration. It is a collective ritual that involves entire generations of Pachino residents and makes Friday night one of the most characteristic moments of the event.
In addition to the vegetable installations, the Inverdurata offers a rich program of side events that enliven the center of Pachino:
Located at the southern end of Sicily, in the province of Syracuse, Pachino is world-famous for its PGI tomato and the Nero d'Avola vineyards. The Inverdurata represents the perfect opportunity to discover this corner of the island, just a short distance from the Vendicari Reserve, the salt pans of Marzamemi, and the beaches of the Ionian coast. A festival that celebrates the deep bond between art, community, and the land, creating a unique event in the landscape of Sicilian festivals.
The 2026 edition of the Inverdurata of Pachino celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the event with a broad theme: «Francis, Patron Saint of Italy. The Canticle of the Creatures, a universal and modern legacy of humility, love, and brotherhood». For the occasion, 16 sketches were selected, created by artists, schools, associations, and local groups along Via Cavour.
The creation of the mosaics began on the afternoon of Friday, May 8 and continued throughout the night, until the early hours of Saturday, May 9, offering visitors the charm of live creation. The program, led by president Giuseppe Tuminello and vice-president Valeria Ballacchino, included shows, workshops, artistic performances, tastings, and guided tours, with great attention to families and young people. The event confirmed its collaborative and non-competitive formula, enhancing local typical products, first and foremost the PGI Pachino tomato.
Pachino can be reached by car via the SS115; the nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Comiso. The reference railway station is Noto, which is connected by local bus lines.
The vegetable mosaics can be admired along Via Cavour, in the historic center of Pachino. Access to the exhibition is free.
The most spectacular moment is the night the sketches are created: it is worth arriving in the evening to witness the birth of the works. We recommend combining your visit with a walk to Marzamemi and the Vendicari Reserve.
