Christmas in Noto is the rich calendar of holiday events that brings the historic center of Noto, in the province of Syracuse, to life every year in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. From late November until Epiphany, the city's UNESCO-listed Baroque settings transform into the perfect backdrop for over a month of lights, music, shows, and tradition, attracting residents and visitors from across the Val di Noto.
The symbol of the event is the grand natural Christmas tree, considered the tallest in Sicily at approximately 37 meters high, which is lit in Piazza XVI Maggio to officially kick off the festivities. The lighting ceremony, accompanied by music and the participation of many citizens, is one of the most anticipated moments and marks the beginning of the long season of events.
The beating heart of the festivities is the Villa Comunale, which turns into an enchanted place: here you will find Christmas markets, a mini funfair with rides and games, and an ice skating rink open throughout the holiday period. For the little ones, Santa's House is set up, where imagination comes to life.
The program includes Christmas concerts, musical evenings, theatrical performances, dance shows, children's events, and film screenings, spread across the squares, churches, and palaces of the center. Classical music and folk carols resonate in the city's churches, while numerous artistic nativity scenes enrich the Christmas itinerary: from the Hermitage of San Corrado to the former Church of Santa Caterina, and exhibitions in historic palaces. There is no shortage of charity days and initiatives spread throughout the districts.
Visiting Christmas in Noto means experiencing the holiday atmosphere in one of Italy's most beautiful Baroque cities, among the Cathedral, Palazzo Ducezio, and the noble palaces illuminated for the holidays. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Noto, is a traditional appointment that combines spirituality, culture, gastronomy, and fun for the whole family.
Noto can be reached by car via the A18/SS115 motorway; the city is about 35 km from Syracuse. The Noto railway station is connected to the Syracuse-Modica-Ragusa line. The nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa (about 90 km away) and Comiso.
Events take place in the historic center, particularly in Piazza XVI Maggio and at the Villa Comunale, between late November and January 6th.
Many outdoor events are free; the ice rink, funfair, and some performances may require a ticket or entry fee. For the updated calendar and details, it is recommended to consult the official channels of the Municipality of Noto.
