Artisan and creative market at the Antica Tonnara in Marzamemi
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Balata Market is a summer event dedicated to creative craftsmanship and design, held in Marzamemi, an enchanting fishing village in the municipality of Pachino, at the southernmost tip of the province of Syracuse, Sicily. The event is set against the backdrop of the Antica Tonnara of Marzamemi, one of the island's most significant historic tuna fisheries, where stone loggias and spaces overlooking the sea offer a truly evocative setting.
For several evenings in August, the ancient warehouses and the loggia of the tonnara welcome exhibitors from all over Sicily and Italy: artisans, designers, illustrators, jewelry makers, ceramicists, and producers of local specialties. The common thread is handmade quality and made in Italy excellence, with unique pieces or small-batch creations that blend tradition, research, and contemporary taste. Alongside the stalls, visitors can find original creations, design objects, and local gastronomic products.
Visiting the Balata Market means immersing yourself in the evening atmosphere of Marzamemi, wandering through cobblestone squares, past fishermen's houses and restaurants overlooking the sea. The event takes place primarily in the evening, when the heat of the day gives way to the sea breeze and the village fills with visitors. A stroll through the stands becomes the perfect opportunity to discover Sicilian craftsmanship and experience one of the iconic locations of the Pachino coast's summer.
Marzamemi, whose name has Arabic origins, has been linked for centuries to tuna fishing and its tonnara, which has been active since the Middle Ages. Today, the village is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Val di Noto and southeastern Sicily, appreciated for the authentic charm of its alleys and the cultural events that enliven its summer. The Balata Market fits into this context as a showcase for quality creativity and craftsmanship, in dialogue with the history and landscape of the site.
At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Balata Market in Marzamemi have not yet been released. Based on previous editions, it is expected that the market will return in August at the Antica Tonnara of Marzamemi (Municipality of Pachino, province of Syracuse), with its usual program dedicated to creative craftsmanship, design, and traditional Sicilian products. We invite you to check the organizers' official channels for updates on dates, times, and the program.
