Summer evenings of street food and live music in the heart of San Candido
The Innichner Dorfplatzfreuden — literally "the joys of the village square" — are one of the most cherished summer traditions in the Municipality of San Candido/Innichen, located in the heart of the Upper Puster Valley in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen (South Tyrol). On select Thursday evenings from mid-July to late August, the pedestrian zone and the Pflegplatz (Senfterplatzl) turn into a large open-air lounge, filled with the aromas of street food, live music, and glowing shop windows.
The heart of the event is gastronomic. Stalls offer Pusterian street food alongside Mediterranean specialties: from canederli (Knödel) to Tirtlan filled with spinach or sauerkraut, from Strauben (spiral fritters) to apple strudel, and polenta with fresh mushrooms or chanterelles. It is a journey of flavors that reflects the dual soul of South Tyrol, blending alpine mountain traditions with southern influences.
The evenings are accompanied by live bands that bring the squares and alleys to life with light, festive entertainment. Celebrations kick off from 5:00 PM and continue throughout the evening. During these events, local shops remain open until approximately 10:30 PM, allowing visitors to combine strolling, shopping, and tasting in a relaxed atmosphere.
The Dorfplatzfreuden attract more than just residents and guests of San Candido: on warm summer nights, they draw visitors from across the Puster Valley and nearby Austria, thanks to San Candido's location just a stone's throw from the border and at the foot of the Sesto Dolomites. It is a free, family-friendly event that highlights the historic center and local businesses.
San Candido/Innichen is one of the most renowned villages in the Upper Puster Valley, famous for its Romanesque Collegiate Church, one of the most important in the Alps, and its proximity to the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The Dorfplatzfreuden are the perfect opportunity to experience the village at sunset, combining culture, gastronomy, and mountain hospitality.
The Innichner Dorfplatzfreuden 2026 will be held on four Thursday evenings: July 9, July 23, August 13, and August 27, 2026, from 5:00 PM until approximately 10:00 PM.
