The grand festival of children's folklore in Italy, arriving in Sicily for the first time
"Il Fanciullo e il Folklore" is the major institutional event of the Italian Federation of Popular Traditions (F.I.T.P.), designed to involve new generations in the rediscovery and transmission of Italy's intangible heritage. Each year, the event brings together hundreds of children and teenagers who, accompanied by their folk groups, perform traditional dances, songs, and games, showcasing the costumes and customs of Italy's diverse regions in the town squares. The spirit of the festival is one of intergenerational dialogue: through these celebrations, elders and adults pass on the knowledge and traditions of their territories to the youth.
The 39th edition takes place in Licata, in the province of Agrigento, from May 1st to 3rd, 2026, representing a historic milestone for the event: it is the first time "Il Fanciullo e il Folklore" has arrived in Sicily. Approximately 750 participants, including children, chaperones, and folk groups from various Italian regions, are expected. The streets and squares of this seaside town will become a vibrant open-air stage, animated by parades, gala performances, and moments of sharing that involve both the young protagonists and the public.
The program alternates between colorful "parades of joy" along the city streets and the Italian Folklore Galas in Piazza Progresso, the beating heart of the event. There will also be presentations of traditional Italian games, guided tours to discover Licata, and moments of reflection, such as the Mass of Peace celebrated at the Sanctuary of Sant'Angelo. The festival concludes with an awards ceremony and an exchange of gifts between the groups, in an atmosphere of friendship and brotherhood.
Overlooking the southern coast of Sicily, Licata hosts the event, confirming its vocation as a place of encounter and culture, also linked to the memory of the singer-songwriter Rosa Balistreri. For the Municipality of Licata and the entire Sicily region, hosting this national festival is an opportunity to promote the territory and enhance popular traditions during a mild time of year, ideal for exploring the Agrigento hinterland and coastline.
