The ancient representation of the twelve months of the year during the Barrafranca Carnival
In the heart of Sicily, in the small town of Barrafranca in the province of Enna, one of the island's most unique carnival traditions is preserved: I Pignatuna, the performance of the twelve months of the year. This popular rural tradition takes place on the last Sunday of Carnival and brings the entire local community into the streets, featuring lavish costumes, festively adorned horses, and the anticipation of the spectacular breaking of the pots.
The pignatuna are terracotta pots hung between houses, decorated with colored paper, ribbons, and streamers. Inside, they hold surprises: confetti, candies, coins, and other treats. The term comes from the local dialect word pignata, meaning pot. When a knight strikes the pot with a stick and breaks it, the contents rain down on the crowd, and the younger spectators rush to collect them.
The event is brought to life by an equestrian procession consisting of a King, a Queen, and twelve knights representing the twelve months of the year. The costumes are richly hand-embroidered and inspired by the attire of dignitaries from the period of Spanish rule in Sicily. In the afternoon, the knights ride through the town streets reciting rhyming verses in the Barrafranca dialect, each dedicated to praising the characteristics of the month they represent; at the end of the recitation, one of the knights breaks a pignatuni.
Common in agricultural communities, the festival celebrates the twelve months of the year with the hope of a good harvest. According to anthropological interpretations, the twelve knights represent the months, while the breaking of the pots symbolizes the death of the old year: the contents falling to the ground represent the seeds that the old year passes on to the new. The event culminates in the main square, where fourteen pignatuna are set up for a dramatic final performance.
The roots of this tradition are ancient, but it has been since 1966 that I Pignatuna was revived and brought to the present day, becoming the defining symbol of the Barrafranca Carnival. Today, the event is organized under the patronage of the Municipality with the involvement of local associations, which take care of the costumes, horses, and the setup of the pots. The safety of the procession is ensured by the State Police, Carabinieri, and Municipal Police.
