About I Pignatuna

I Pignatuna is the oldest and most evocative tradition of the Barrafranca Carnival: on the last Sunday of Carnival, an equestrian procession featuring a King, a Queen, and twelve knights representing the months of the year parades through the streets of Barrafranca, in the hinterland of the Enna province. The knights recite verses in the local dialect before using sticks to break the pignatuna—terracotta pots filled with confetti, candies, and sweets, hung between balconies. It is a popular rural festival celebrating the transition from the old year to the new in the heart of Sicily.

I Pignatuna: the rural Carnival of Barrafranca

In the heart of Sicily, in the small town of Barrafranca in the province of Enna, one of the island's most unique carnival traditions is preserved: I Pignatuna, the performance of the twelve months of the year. This popular rural tradition takes place on the last Sunday of Carnival and brings the entire local community into the streets, featuring lavish costumes, festively adorned horses, and the anticipation of the spectacular breaking of the pots.

What are the pignatuna

The pignatuna are terracotta pots hung between houses, decorated with colored paper, ribbons, and streamers. Inside, they hold surprises: confetti, candies, coins, and other treats. The term comes from the local dialect word pignata, meaning pot. When a knight strikes the pot with a stick and breaks it, the contents rain down on the crowd, and the younger spectators rush to collect them.

The procession of the twelve months

The event is brought to life by an equestrian procession consisting of a King, a Queen, and twelve knights representing the twelve months of the year. The costumes are richly hand-embroidered and inspired by the attire of dignitaries from the period of Spanish rule in Sicily. In the afternoon, the knights ride through the town streets reciting rhyming verses in the Barrafranca dialect, each dedicated to praising the characteristics of the month they represent; at the end of the recitation, one of the knights breaks a pignatuni.

Meaning and symbolism

Common in agricultural communities, the festival celebrates the twelve months of the year with the hope of a good harvest. According to anthropological interpretations, the twelve knights represent the months, while the breaking of the pots symbolizes the death of the old year: the contents falling to the ground represent the seeds that the old year passes on to the new. The event culminates in the main square, where fourteen pignatuna are set up for a dramatic final performance.

History and revival

The roots of this tradition are ancient, but it has been since 1966 that I Pignatuna was revived and brought to the present day, becoming the defining symbol of the Barrafranca Carnival. Today, the event is organized under the patronage of the Municipality with the involvement of local associations, which take care of the costumes, horses, and the setup of the pots. The safety of the procession is ensured by the State Police, Carabinieri, and Municipal Police.

Barrafranca and the province of Enna

Barrafranca is located in the hinterland of central Sicily, in the province of Enna, an area with an ancient tradition of grain farming and rural life. The Barrafranca Carnival, of which I Pignatuna is the most anticipated moment, enlivens the historic center of the town and offers a unique opportunity to discover the folklore and rural roots of this corner of the island.

I Pignatuna — edition 2026

In 2026, I Pignatuna returned to enliven the Barrafranca Carnival, included in the official program of events approved by the Municipality of Barrafranca with Council Resolution no. 4 of January 15, 2026. The traditional recitation of the twelve months, with the procession of the King, the Queen, and the twelve knights and the spectacular breaking of the pignatuna, took place on the afternoon of the last Sunday of Carnival, before the closing of the festival with Shrove Tuesday on February 17.

The 2026 Barrafranca Carnival was approved by the municipal administration with Council Resolution no. 4 of January 15, 2026, which defined the program of events and the guidelines for participation.

At the heart of the festival, I Pignatuna once again featured the ancient recitation of the twelve months of the year in 2026: the equestrian procession with the King, the Queen, and the twelve knights paraded through the historic center, reciting verses in the local dialect and breaking terracotta pots filled with confetti and sweets.

The 2026 Barrafranca Carnival concluded with the Shrove Tuesday parade on February 17: from 2:30 PM, the gathering of masked groups, and from 3:00 PM, the parade along Viale Generale Cannada, Corso Italia, Via Ferreri Grazia, Viale della Repubblica, Via Lazio, and Corso Garibaldi, with performances at the Via Lazio square, near the 3G area, and in the square in front of the San Francesco church.
