The patron saint of Aidone and the historical re-enactment of the Christian and Saracen knights
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of central Sicily, perched on the hills of the Enna province just a short distance from the famous archaeological site of Morgantina, the village of Aidone celebrates its patron saint every year with one of the most distinctive traditional festivals in the Sicilian hinterland. Saint Lawrence is a rare figure in the island's landscape of patron saints: only a few communities across Sicily venerate him as their protector, which makes the devotion in Aidone particularly heartfelt and unique.
The most anticipated moment of the festival is the historical re-enactment known locally as U Battimentu (in the Gallo-Italic dialect U batt'mรฌnt'), scheduled for August 8th and 9th. It is a period-costume spectacle that recalls an episode dating back to the Norman conquest: a group of Christian knights, inspired by the Lombard contingents of Roger of Hauteville's army, faces a group of Saracen knights in two successive assaults. The first clash ends with an uncertain outcome, while in the second, the Saracens are defeated, and the event culminates in a symbolic peace, with both groups parading together toward the center of Aidone. The original battle is said to have taken place near the so-called Passo dei Giudei, in the current Ciappino district.
In ancient times, the re-enactment was held only every ten years, a tradition that was interrupted toward the end of the 19th century; since 2005, the Associazione Contessa Adelasia di Aidone has restored the event on an annual basis, returning one of its most beloved symbols to the village.
On August 10th, the day of the Saint's liturgical feast, a solemn Eucharistic Celebration takes place, followed by the traditional procession of the statue of Saint Lawrence through the streets of the historic center. The festivities conclude with a pyrotechnic display: fireworks illuminate the village sky starting at midnight, coinciding with the famous Perseid meteor shower, the "night of Saint Lawrence." During the festival days, the Municipality of Aidone and the Pro Loco organize musical performances, band concerts, and entertainment for residents, returning emigrants, and visitors.
Visiting Aidone during the Feast of Saint Lawrence means immersing yourself in a living tradition, blending popular faith, historical memory, and folklore. The village in the province of Enna also houses the Parish Museum of Saint Lawrence, with precious testimonies of the Saint's veneration, and is located just a short distance from the Archaeological Museum of Aidone and the Morgantina archaeological area, an unmissable stop for those combining the festival with the discovery of central Sicily's heritage.
At the moment, the dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published by the organizers. The festival is a well-established annual event: according to tradition, U Battimentu takes place on August 8th and 9th, while the solemn procession of Saint Lawrence through the streets of Aidone's historic center and the fireworks display take place on August 10th.
