Celebrating the honey and medicinal herbs of Val Varaita in Casteldelfino
The Honey and Medicinal Herbs Festival is one of the most beloved and long-standing events in Casteldelfino, a village in the Val Varaita, in the province of Cuneo, nestled in the heart of the Occitan Piedmont at the foot of Monviso. Now in its third decade, the festival has become a summer landmark for the entire valley, traditionally closing the busy August calendar of events.
Organized by the Pro Loco Casteldelfino Viva with the support of the local municipality, the festival celebrates two treasures of the Alpine territory: mountain honey, produced by local beekeepers, and the medicinal and healing herbs that have grown on the slopes of the Val Varaita for centuries, forming an integral part of the Occitan peasant culture.
Throughout the weekend, the village comes alive with exhibition stands and a rich local products market, set up at the Multi-purpose Sports Center (the historic former Casermette) and along the streets and squares of the town center. Stalls feature honey producers, medicinal herbs, alpine cheeses, cured meats, and other typical products from the Cuneo mountains.
The festival is much more than just a market; it is an opportunity to discover the Occitan culture of the Val Varaita, its musical traditions, and its mountain cuisine. The grand polenta feast is one of the most anticipated moments, along with the traditional Occitan music and dances that enliven the evenings. It is the perfect day or weekend trip for those looking to combine a visit to the Cuneo valleys with a taste of the authentic flavors of the Alpine Piedmont.
Casteldelfino, with its hamlets and landscapes of forests and alpine pastures, provides the ideal backdrop for this festival that celebrates the identity of an entire mountain community.
The Honey and Medicinal Herbs Festival returns to Casteldelfino on August 17 and 18, 2026. As per tradition, the weekend will be dedicated to mountain honey, medicinal herbs, and typical products of the Val Varaita, with a market along the village streets, Occitan gastronomy, and the great polenta feast by the Pro Loco Casteldelfino Viva.
The detailed program with times, entertainment, and musical appointments will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
