Homemade Tordello Festival

A village festival celebrating Lucca's culinary traditions

The Homemade Tordello Festival in Segromigno in Monte, a hamlet in the municipality of Capannori in the province of Lucca, is one of the most cherished food events in the Lucca Plain. For nearly forty years, throughout the evenings of June, the parish grounds on Via delle Selvette have transformed into a vibrant meeting place where visitors can enjoy traditional rural dishes, prepared just as they used to be by local community volunteers.

The tordello, king of the table

The signature dish is, of course, the homemade tordello: a stuffed pasta typical of the Lucca area, rolled out and sealed strictly by hand, then dressed with a savory meat ragù. It is a labor-intensive preparation that requires great skill, which is why the festival has become a special occasion over the years to savor it in its most authentic form, following family recipes passed down through generations.

More than just tordelli: the cuisine of the Plain

Alongside the tordelli, the food stalls offer a rich menu of Lucca specialties:

• Grilled meats such as cockerel, sausage, rosticciana (pork ribs), and pork steak
• Roasted mezzina, a rolled pancetta slow-baked in the oven, a rare delicacy due to its complex preparation
• Oven-baked main courses, side dishes of fried potatoes, and fagioli all'uccelletto (beans in tomato sauce)
• On select evenings, salt cod (baccalà), sausages, and beans
• To finish, the famous torta coi becchi, a traditional Lucca dessert

A celebration for the whole community

Organized by the Parish of Segromigno in Monte, the festival is a popular, free-entry event designed for families and anyone looking to spend an evening in good company. The covered food stands open every evening from 7:00 PM, and the event continues even in case of rain. After dinner, the evenings are enlivened by music and entertainment, capturing the simple, genuine spirit of Tuscan village festivals.
