Christmas in Mologno, among the mountains of the Garfagnana

When the evenings grow colder and the Serchio river flows through the snow-dusted hills, the hamlet of Mologno, in the Municipality of Barga (province of Lucca, Tuscany), prepares for its Christmas Market. It is one of those village festivals that feels like a true community gathering: no big shop windows, just plenty of stalls, the scent of mulled wine, and lights that flicker on all at once as darkness falls.

Where and when

The event takes place in Piazza della Stazione, the open space next to the Barga-Gallicano train station, which also gives Mologno its nickname, "Barga Station." The market is traditionally held on a Sunday in December, from early afternoon until evening, marking the start of the Christmas festivities in the hamlet.

What you will find

The heart of the day consists of local craft stalls, offering plenty of zero-mile gift ideas, and stands featuring typical products from the Serchio Valley. There is no shortage of treats: the food stands offer local specialties, from necci (the typical chestnut flour waffles of the Garfagnana) to fried dough, accompanied by a glass of hot mulled wine to warm up while browsing the stalls.

The most anticipated moment: the lighting ceremony

At 6:00 PM, when it is fully dark, the Christmas lights across all of Mologno are switched on: it is the most evocative moment of the day, bringing families, children, and visitors together in the square. The Santa Claus house inside the Christmas Village is the meeting point for the little ones, complete with letters and souvenir photos.

A community festival

The Mologno Christmas Market is organized by the Mologno Village Committee, the association of volunteers who animate the hamlet's life throughout the year with events like the Mondinata and summer dinners. It is a simple and genuine opportunity to experience the Christmas atmosphere of the Media Valle del Serchio, far from the crowds of large city markets, and to discover an authentic corner of the Lucchese Garfagnana just a few kilometers from the medieval town of Barga.
