The sacred representation of Holy Wednesday and the Easter rites of Serradifalco
In Serradifalco, a town in the province of Caltanissetta in the heart of central Sicily, Holy Week is marked by one of the most evocative religious events in the Nisseno region: "The Passion of Christ." This sacred performance, organized for over thirty years by the Pier Giorgio Frassati Cultural Association, takes place on the evening of Holy Wednesday and symbolically marks the beginning of all Easter-related rites and traditions in the town.
The event begins with a historical pageant that departs from the square in front of the "F. Polizzi" Middle School and travels through the main streets of the town center โ Via Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, Via De Gasperi, Via Chiarelli, Corso Garibaldi, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Via Duca, Piazza Madre, and Piazza Aldo Moro โ until it reaches Piazza San Francesco. Around ninety people take part, including actors and extras, all dressed in period costumes.
The performance unfolds across four stages, one of which is the natural setting of the churchyard of San Francesco. The most iconic scenes of the Passion are enacted in a chronological continuum faithful to the events, followed by the Via Dolorosa along Via Duca: Christ carries the cross, falling along the way, until he reaches Calvary.
One of the most visually striking moments is the re-enactment of the presence of the soldiers of the Legio X Fretensis, the Roman legion stationed in Judea at the time of the Passion. With their commands issued in Latin and their imposing presence, the legionaries create an intense and immersive atmosphere, which is considered a hallmark of the Serradifalco performance.
The other Holy Week appointments, organized by the Pastoral Unit of Serradifalco, the Maria SS. Addolorata Association, the "San Giuseppe" Artisans' Circle, and the Pro Loco, revolve around the Passion of Christ. Highlights include Holy Thursday with the "Procession of the Saints," the washing of the feet, and the visit to the Altars of Repose (the so-called "Viaggiu di li Burgisi"), as well as Good Friday with the journey of the Real Maestranza, the enthronement of Christ on the Cross at Calvary, the Scinnenza (the Deposition), and the solemn procession of the Urn with the Via Crucis.
Deeply rooted in the community, the Passion of Christ in Serradifalco represents the pride of local traditions and one of the most attended events of Holy Week in the province of Caltanissetta, capable of involving the entire town every year through faith, memory, and popular theater.
The 2026 edition opened on Wednesday, April 1st at 6:30 PM with the historical pageant which, departing from the square of the "F. Polizzi" Middle School, crossed Via Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, Via De Gasperi, Via Chiarelli, Corso Garibaldi, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Via Duca, Piazza Madre, and Piazza Aldo Moro up to Piazza San Francesco.
The sacred performance, organized by the Pier Giorgio Frassati Cultural Association, was staged across four platforms โ including the natural churchyard of San Francesco โ with the scenes of the Passion in chronological sequence, the re-enactment of the Legio X Fretensis, and the Via Dolorosa leading to Calvary. Holy Week then continued with the rites of Holy Thursday and Good Friday organized by the Pastoral Unit and local associations.
