About Holy Week of Sessa Aurunca

The Holy Week of Sessa Aurunca is one of the most intense rituals in Campania. It features six local brotherhoods, the archaic three-part Miserere chant based on Psalm 50, and the solemn Good Friday Procession of the Mysteries, which winds through the medieval historic center illuminated by bonfires. The statues of the Passion move to the rhythmic 'cunnulella' step, accompanied by the funeral marches of the Arciconfraternita del SS. Crocifisso band, in a rite recognized as intangible cultural heritage.

A ritual spanning centuries

In the heart of the Alto Casertano region, the town of Sessa Aurunca (Province of Caserta, Campania) preserves one of the most intense and well-preserved Holy Weeks in Southern Italy. For six days, the ancient city of the Aurunci changes: lights dim, daily rhythms pause, and the medieval historic center, dominated by the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, becomes the stage for a popular liturgy of sounds, rhythmic steps, and long silences. This is not a tourist re-enactment; it is a living devotion, practiced by local families from generation to generation.

Six brotherhoods, six penitential processions

The Sessa ritual is not an isolated event but a choral journey involving the six local brotherhoods. From Holy Monday to Holy Wednesday, each leaves its own church in a penitential procession to reach the Cathedral for the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The brothers walk hooded, in ritual attire, according to an unchanging calendar:

  • Arciconfraternita di San Biagio โ€” Holy Monday, morning
  • Confraternita del SS. Rifugio โ€” Holy Monday, afternoon
  • Arciconfraternita del SS. Crocifisso e Monte dei Morti โ€” Holy Tuesday, morning
  • Arciconfraternita della SS. Concezione โ€” Holy Tuesday, afternoon
  • Confraternita di San Carlo Borromeo โ€” Holy Wednesday, morning
  • Arciconfraternita del SS. Rosario โ€” Holy Wednesday, afternoon

The Miserere chant

The element that makes the Holy Week of Sessa Aurunca unique is the Miserere chant, a polyphonic composition of oral tradition performed in three voices based on the verses of David's Psalm 50. There is no official score: the melody is passed down by ear, from father to son, and is inextricably linked to the Arciconfraternita del SS. Crocifisso, founded in 1575 by a group of laypeople with the support of Franciscan friars.

The Miserere already resonates on the Fridays of March, when the Sorrowful Mysteries are displayed in the Church of San Giovanni a Villa, and reaches its most solemn form during the Tenebrae Service on Holy Wednesday, celebrated around the 'Saetta', a triangular candelabra with fifteen candles that are extinguished one by one until complete darkness.

The Good Friday Procession of the Mysteries

This is the climax. At nightfall, the procession leaves the Church of San Giovanni a Villa and winds through the streets of the ancient village, lit only by bonfires along the route. The hooded brothers carry the statues of the Passion Mysteries on their shoulders โ€” including the Dead Christ and the Three Marys โ€” advancing with the cunnulella, the characteristic swaying gait of two steps forward and one back, giving the procession a hypnotic, undulating movement.

The journey is accompanied by the Miserere chant and funeral marches performed by the brotherhood's band. The procession lasts all night: the return to San Giovanni a Villa is expected well after midnight, when the city is deserted and silent.

Holy Saturday: The Deposition and the Pietร

At dawn on Holy Saturday, it is the turn of the Confraternita di San Carlo Borromeo and the Confraternita del SS. Rifugio to carry the Mysteries of the Deposition and the Pietร  in procession, accompanied by the Pious Women dressed in mourning. It is a more intimate and collected procession than the nocturnal one, but no less poignant, closing the Passion cycle before the Easter Vigil.

A recognized intangible heritage

The Procession of the Mysteries and the Miserere chant have been included in the census of Italian intangible cultural heritage and the Inventory of Intangible Heritage of Campania. In March 2024, the Miserere of the Arciconfraternita del SS. Crocifisso represented the Campania Region in Rome. For years, there has been work toward a potential UNESCO recognition.

Tips for visitors

Sessa Aurunca is also worth visiting by day: the historic center preserves a Romanesque Cathedral with a mosaic pulpit, a Roman theater, and a cryptoporticus. Those arriving for Holy Week should keep in mind that the Good Friday procession lasts until late at night and that silence is an integral part of the rite: the local community welcomes visitors, but asks them to participate, not just watch.

Holy Week of Sessa Aurunca โ€” edition 2026

Holy Week 2026 in Sessa Aurunca

The 2026 calendar followed the traditional rhythm of the Sessa ritual. The prelude was musical: on Sunday, March 29, Palm Sunday, the 23rd edition of the Holy Week Music Concert was held, promoted by the Municipality of Sessa Aurunca and performed by the Historic Band of Sessa Aurunca conducted by Maestro Benedetto Zonfrillo.

From Holy Monday to Holy Wednesday, the penitential processions of the six brotherhoods toward the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul took place. On Holy Wednesday, at 8:00 PM, the Tenebrae Service with the 'Saetta' prepared for the Triduum. The Holy Thursday and Good Friday celebrations in the Cathedral were presided over by Bishop Giacomo Cirulli, leading the united dioceses of Sessa Aurunca, Teano-Calvi, and Alife-Caiazzo.

The heart of the edition remained the Good Friday Procession of the Mysteries, with the three-part Miserere chant and the funeral marches of the Arciconfraternita del SS. Crocifisso band along the streets of the historic center illuminated by bonfires.
