About Caltanissetta Holy Week

The Holy Week of Caltanissetta is one of the most intense and spectacular Passion celebrations in Sicily. The heart of the rites is the Vare procession on Maundy Thursday: sixteen monumental sculptural groups created between 1883 and 1902, which parade through the historic center until late at night, accompanied by the funeral marches of brass bands. This is joined by the Real Maestranza, the Varicedde, and the moving procession of the Black Christ, the "Lord of the City," which concludes Good Friday in an atmosphere of deep devotion.

One of the greatest Holy Weeks in Sicily

In the historic center of Caltanissetta, the capital of the province of the same name in the heart of Sicily, Holy Week is much more than a religious appointment: it is the very soul of the city. For nearly a week, streets, squares, and churches transform into the setting for ancient rites that intertwine popular faith, sacred art, and tradition, drawing thousands of visitors from across the island and beyond every year.

The Vare of Maundy Thursday: the heart of the festival

The most anticipated and famous moment is the Vare procession, also known as the Mysteries, which takes place on the evening of Maundy Thursday. Sixteen monumental sculptural groups represent scenes from the Passion of Christ and the Stations of the Cross: from the Last Supper to the Agony in the Garden, from the Flagellation to the Ecce Homo, up to the Crucifixion, the Deposition, and Our Lady of Sorrows. They were created between 1883 and 1902 by the Neapolitan sculptor Francesco Biangardi and his son Vincenzo, using a mixed technique of wood, papier-mâché, and plastered canvas.

Once carried on the shoulders of the faithful, since the late 1960s the Vare have paraded on wheeled floats, decorated with flowers and lights. The procession starts from Piazza Garibaldi, announced by traditional cannon fire, and winds through the city until late at night, cradled by the funeral marches performed by musical bands.

The rites accompanying the Passion

  • Palm Sunday: the Jesus of Nazareth procession opens the week with a re-enactment of Christ's entry into Jerusalem.
  • Holy Wednesday: in the morning, the Real Maestranza, an ancient militia of the arts and crafts guilds, parades with the handing over of the city keys from the Mayor to the Captain; in the evening, it is the turn of the Varicedde, nineteen small sculptural groups that anticipate the Vare.
  • Good Friday: the poignant procession of the Black Christ, the "Lord of the City," a small wooden crucifix blackened by the smoke of candles, carried on the shoulders of the Fogliamari (greengrocers) and accompanied by their ancient laments.

A living and deep-rooted tradition

A core part of Caltanissetta's identity, the Holy Week unites the sacred and the popular in a heritage passed down from generation to generation. Between exhibitions, Easter dioramas, and cultural meetings, the entire city participates in one of the most heartfelt events in the province and all of Sicily.
