The Passion rites and the grand Vare procession on Maundy Thursday
In the historic center of Caltanissetta, the capital of the province of the same name in the heart of Sicily, Holy Week is much more than a religious appointment: it is the very soul of the city. For nearly a week, streets, squares, and churches transform into the setting for ancient rites that intertwine popular faith, sacred art, and tradition, drawing thousands of visitors from across the island and beyond every year.
The most anticipated and famous moment is the Vare procession, also known as the Mysteries, which takes place on the evening of Maundy Thursday. Sixteen monumental sculptural groups represent scenes from the Passion of Christ and the Stations of the Cross: from the Last Supper to the Agony in the Garden, from the Flagellation to the Ecce Homo, up to the Crucifixion, the Deposition, and Our Lady of Sorrows. They were created between 1883 and 1902 by the Neapolitan sculptor Francesco Biangardi and his son Vincenzo, using a mixed technique of wood, papier-mâché, and plastered canvas.
Once carried on the shoulders of the faithful, since the late 1960s the Vare have paraded on wheeled floats, decorated with flowers and lights. The procession starts from Piazza Garibaldi, announced by traditional cannon fire, and winds through the city until late at night, cradled by the funeral marches performed by musical bands.
A core part of Caltanissetta's identity, the Holy Week unites the sacred and the popular in a heritage passed down from generation to generation. Between exhibitions, Easter dioramas, and cultural meetings, the entire city participates in one of the most heartfelt events in the province and all of Sicily.
In 2026, the Passion rites were concentrated in the central days of Holy Week. Wednesday, April 1st opened the celebrations with the procession of the Real Maestranza and, in the evening, the Varicedde. Maundy Thursday, April 2nd, saw the highlight event, the Vare procession, while Good Friday, April 3rd, featured the procession of the Black Christ, the "Lord of the City." Easter Sunday fell on April 5, 2026.
The rites take place during the week leading up to Easter. The Vare procession occurs on the evening of Maundy Thursday, departing around 8:00 PM from Piazza Garibaldi.
Caltanissetta is accessible by car via the A19 Palermo–Catania motorway (Caltanissetta exit) and the SS 640 from Agrigento. Caltanissetta Xirbi station is connected to the regional rail network. The nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Palermo-Punta Raisi.
Admission to the rites is free. It is recommended to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot along the route in the historic center and to book accommodation in advance, given the high turnout during the Easter period.
