Centuries-old Passion rites in the heart of the City of Temples
In the heart of Agrigento, the provincial capital and City of Temples, Holy Week is one of the most deeply felt moments of the year. For days, the city comes to a standstill, gathering around its secular rites passed down through generations by the historic local confraternities. Organized by the Archdiocese of Agrigento, the event weaves together liturgy, popular devotion, and tradition, turning the streets of the historic center into a grand open-air theater of the Passion of Christ.
The climax is Good Friday, when Agrigento renews one of its most profound and defining rituals. The day begins in the morning with Lauds and the floral tribute by the confreres and bearers, followed by the procession of the Suffering Jesus along the traditional route. A moving encounter between the statues of Jesus and the Sorrowful Mother takes place in front of the Sanctuary of the Addolorata. In the afternoon, the Crucifixion, the meditation on the Seven Words, and the solemn celebration of the Lord's Passion are held at the Cathedral, presided over by the Archbishop. In the evening, after the deposition of Jesus from the Cross, the poignant evening procession of the Urn carrying the Dead Christ and the statue of the Sorrowful Mother winds its way through the city streets once more.
The organizational heart of the rites lies with the ancient confraternities of Agrigento, including the Archconfraternity of the Most Holy Crucifix and the Archconfraternity of Mary of the Seven Sorrows, which is linked to the Sanctuary of the Addolorata. The main places of worship involved are the Cathedral of San Gerlando, the city's symbol, and the Sanctuary of the Addolorata, around which the processions unfold. Over the years, the route has been adapted to preserve the most significant spots in the historic center without ever betraying the spirit of the tradition.
Attending Holy Week in Agrigento means immersing yourself in a heritage of popular traditions and authentic religiosity that defines the heart of Sicily. Between the chants of the Santa Cecilia Philharmonic Association Choir, sacred performances, and the choral participation of an entire community, the Agrigento rites offer visitors a unique opportunity to discover the true soul of the capital and the entire Sicilian region.
Holy Week 2026 in Agrigento begins on March 21 at the Sanctuary of the Addolorata with "The Sixth Sorrow of Mary" and continues with the city's Via Crucis (March 27, from Porta di Ponte to San Domenico), Palm Sunday (March 29), and the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral (April 1). The Easter Triduum features the Holy Thursday (April 2) Eucharist "In Coena Domini" and the Marian Vigil, while Good Friday (April 3) hosts the central rites. On Holy Saturday (April 4), the Hour of the Mother and the Easter Vigil are celebrated, leading up to Easter Sunday (April 5).
