The patronal festival of Aragona, blending faith, processions, and tradition
The Feast of the Madonna del Rosario is the primary religious and civil event in the town of Aragona, located in the province of Agrigento, in the heart of Sicily. Devotion to the Virgin of the Rosary has accompanied the Aragonese community since the town's founding, but it was on May 13, 1875, that Pope Pius IX, at the request of the Bishop of Agrigento Domenico Turano, officially proclaimed "Maria Santissima del Rosario" the principal patron saint of the city, granting her all the rights and honors due to local patrons. Since then, October 7th, the liturgical feast day of the Madonna del Rosario, has been the date around which the celebrations revolve.
The festival is preceded by a preparatory triduum with evening services at the Church of the Madonna del Rosario. The solemn day opens with festive morning bell ringing, followed by a Eucharistic celebration, a tribute from children to the patron saint, and the recitation of the Supplication to the Madonna of Pompeii. In the afternoon, following the Solemn Mass, the procession begins.
The heart of the day is the solemn procession of the 18th-century wooden statue of the Madonna del Rosario, accompanied by statues of Saints Peter and Paul. It is carried through the main streets of the historic center to the mother church, where it remains on display for a week. It is one of the most deeply felt moments of the year for the people of Aragona, who fill the streets to follow the pageant amidst prayers, brass bands, and popular devotion.
The festival revolves around the Church of the Madonna del Rosario, built in 1689 in the town's main square, one of the oldest and most beautiful in Aragona. The building houses a precious 17th-century wooden ceiling, rediscovered during renovations in the 1990s, as well as silver and gold monstrances, chalices, and ex-votos; the crypt below houses a small museum. The church serves as a historical and artistic landmark for the entire community.
Like many Sicilian patronal festivals, the Madonna del Rosario in Aragona weaves together the sacred and the civil: street stalls, illuminations, brass bands, public entertainment, and the traditional evening fireworks that close the day. The festival is an opportunity to rediscover the roots of a village in the Agrigento hinterland and to experience the authentic hospitality of the Sicily Region.
The 2026 Feast of the Madonna del Rosario in Aragona (AG) will take place around October 7th, the liturgical feast day of the patron saint. The usual preparatory triduum, morning bell ringing, tribute from children, Supplication to the Madonna of Pompeii, Solemn Mass, and the procession of the 18th-century statue to the mother church are expected, along with traditional evening fireworks. The detailed calendar of civil events will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Aragona is located in the province of Agrigento, a few kilometers from the provincial capital. By car, it can be reached via the SS189 (Agrigento-Palermo); the Aragona-Caldare train station is on the Agrigento-Palermo line. The nearest airport is Palermo-Punta Raisi.
