The patronal feast of Racalmuto: a blend of faith, ox-drawn carts, and the cilii
The Feast of Maria SS. del Monte is the beating heart of the identity of Racalmuto, a small town in the hinterland of the province of Agrigento and home to the writer Leonardo Sciascia. Celebrated since 1503, it is one of the oldest and most attended religious events in south-central Sicily: every year, in the second week of July, it attracts thousands of people, many of whom are emigrants returning to their hometown specifically to attend.
Tradition tells that the simulacrum of the Virgin, a white marble sculpture from the Gagini school, arrived in Racalmuto in 1503. According to legend, the ox-drawn cart carrying it stopped mysteriously at the entrance to the town: a sign interpreted as the Madonna's desire to remain there. Since then, the Sanctuary of Maria SS. del Monte, reached by climbing the famous staircase, has been the spiritual center of the Racalmuto community.
The festival traditionally opens with cannon fire, the tammuriata, and the entrance of the town band, which enliven the evenings along with the illuminations decorating Piazza Umberto I and the main streets. The celebrations conclude with the final procession of the statue on the decorated cart and the fireworks, the most anticipated and spectacular moment of the entire event.
More than just a religious festival, the Feast of the Monte is a collective ritual that unites devotion, historical memory, and popular folklore. For the community of Racalmuto, it represents an opportunity to reunite, pass down ancient customs, and reaffirm the bond with their land in the heart of Sicily.
The Feast of Maria SS. del Monte 2026 will be held in Racalmuto (province of Agrigento) from Friday, July 10 to Sunday, July 12, following its traditional placement in the second week of the month.
The structure of the festival remains that which has been handed down for centuries: opening with cannon fire and the town band, a historical pageant in costume, the procession of the statue on the ox-drawn cart, the spectacular pigliata di lu ciliu, and the prummisiuni on Sunday along the Sanctuary stairs, closing with fireworks.
The detailed 2026 program, with times and evening appointments, has not yet been published: the organizing committee will release it closer to the event via the official website and the Sanctuary's social media channels.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, with precise times and evening events, will be announced by the organizing committee in the weeks prior to the festival via the official website and the Maria SS. del Monte Sanctuary Facebook page. The usual structure includes:
Racalmuto is located in the Agrigento hinterland, along the SS640 between Agrigento and Caltanissetta. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Caltanissetta exit) or from Agrigento (about 25 km). The Racalmuto railway station is served by the Agrigento-Caltanissetta-Caltagirone line.
The festivities are concentrated in the historic center, in Piazza Umberto I and along Via Garibaldi, with the Sanctuary of Maria SS. del Monte as the main landmark.
The festival takes place in the height of summer: plan for light clothing, water, and a good dose of patience for the crowds during the peak moments (the cart, the pigliata di lu ciliu, and the fireworks). Admission to all events is free.
