History and Flavors at Segonzano Castle is a guided enogastronomic experience held in the municipality of Segonzano, in the Cembra Valley, within the Autonomous Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). The initiative, organized by the Fiemme Cembra Tourist Board, combines a scenic walk with the historical narrative of an ancient manor and a tasting of mountain wines produced right at the foot of the castle.
The meeting point is the picturesque village of Piazzo, a hamlet of Segonzano nestled among terraced vineyards and characterized by a timeless atmosphere. From here, the guide leads participants along an easy trail that climbs up to the ruins of Segonzano Castle, perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Avisio gorge. Built in the 13th century and first mentioned in 1216, the castle served as a strategic stronghold for valley trade for centuries before being irreparably damaged during the Napoleonic battle of 1796.
Within the walls of the manor, now a ruin but still full of charm, the past comes alive through the guide's storytelling, weaving together historical facts and folk traditions. The protagonist is the legend of Picena, a mythical figure linked to the origins of the vine in this part of Trentino, made even more evocative by the tradition that depicts her in a work attributed to Albrecht Dürer, who stayed in these lands between the Cembra Valley and the Avisio.
At the end of the visit, the experience continues at the nearby Barone a Prato winery, managed by the A Prato family, the historic owners of the castle. After a brief introduction to production and aging techniques, participants taste the winery's flagship wines accompanied by a platter of local Trentino products. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the mountain viticulture of the Cembra Valley, famous for its porphyry terraces and Müller Thurgau.
An afternoon that combines gentle hiking, historical heritage, and tasting, ideal for those who want to discover the authentic face of Trentino and the Cembra Valley.
