Allegorical floats, masked groups, and major DJ sets in the heart of Daunia
The Historical Carnival of Apricena, located in the heart of the Daunia region in the province of Foggia, is one of the most deep-rooted events in northern Puglia. Its origins date back to 1955, when the town celebrated the 'Festa della Matricola': from that goliardic tradition, a carnival has grown year after year, thanks to the participation of schools and the work of local associations, most notably Movidaunia, which has been active since the eighties.
Today, the Apricena Carnival is recognized as one of the historical carnivals of the Puglia Region and is part of the Network of Great Carnivals of Puglia and Italy, a recognition that testifies to the organizers' commitment and the level achieved by the event, which successfully blends tradition and modernity. Over the years, the event has become a defining appointment for the entire Apricena community, drawing tens of thousands of people from across the Capitanata area and beyond.
The heart of the festival lies in the parades of allegorical floats, authentic papier-mâché masterpieces resulting from months of work by local craftsmen. Accompanying them are masked groups, with original choreographies and themes that reinterpret current events, pop culture, and satire each year. A shared festive atmosphere develops around the parades, with the participation of families, children, and many visitors in costume.
Alongside tradition, the Apricena Carnival focuses heavily on music: the evenings are animated by DJ sets and live performances that have brought well-known national names to Apricena over the years. A stage, a food truck area with local gastronomic specialties, and free admission complete a formula that unites the children's carnival with the nighttime party for younger crowds.
As the organizers themselves recall, the Carnival is "that moment when Apricena stops rushing and comes back together": color, music, and joy for days that involve the entire town. For those visiting Puglia in winter, it represents an opportunity to discover an authentic popular tradition, far from the most touristy destinations and deeply linked to the identity of the Capitanata.
The 2026 edition took place over three days: Sunday, February 8, Sunday, February 15, and Saturday, February 21. The parade featured seven allegorical floats created by the Movidaunia and Elementi Creativi associations, accompanied by masked groups.
Admission to all days was free, with a food truck area and local specialties. As highlighted by Mayor Antonio Potenza, the Carnival represents "that moment when Apricena stops rushing and comes back together." The administration expressed satisfaction with the excellent success of the edition, defined as lively, dynamic, and increasingly attractive.

Apricena is located in the province of Foggia, at the foot of the Gargano. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale or San Severo exit) and the SS16 state road. The Apricena-Lesina railway station is on the Adriatic line.
Admission to all days of the Carnival is free. The float parades generally take place in the afternoon, while shows and DJ sets animate the evenings in the square. Wearing a costume is recommended.
The historic center is closed to traffic during the parades: it is advisable to park in the outer areas. A food truck area with Puglian specialties is available.
