The granfondo cycling race between the sea and the hills of the Tuscan Maremma
The Granfondo Poggi di Maremma is one of the most anticipated events in the Tuscan amateur cycling calendar. It takes place in Castiglione della Pescaia, a seaside gem in the province of Grosseto, and attracts hundreds of cyclists from all over Italy every year. The event is organized by the Gruppo Ciclistico Castiglionese and is part of the Circuito Volchem, under the aegis of ACSI Ciclismo.
The charm of this race lies in the contrast between the start on the seafront and the challenging hills of the hinterland: from the sea of Castiglione, you climb towards the poggi (hills) that give the race its name, crossing a territory rich in Etruscan history, abandoned mines, and medieval villages.
The event offers three tracks designed for every level:
The long routes touch some of the most evocative places in the Maremma of Grosseto: Vetulonia with the famous Scala Santa climb, Caldana, Ravi, the Lago dell'Accesa, Capanne, the medieval city of Massa Marittima, Giuncarico, and Tirli, before returning to the seafront of Castiglione.
The Poggi di Maremma is much more than a race: it is a showcase for the territory of Castiglione della Pescaia and southern Tuscany. The event enjoys the support of the municipal administration, the Maremma Experience Consortium, and the Castiglione Tourist Consortium, which see cycle tourism as a driver for the spring season, when the mild climate of the Maremma coast is ideal for cycling.
The race weekend includes the opening of the village with the collection of race packs, the group start from the seafront, refreshment points along the route, the final pasta party, and the awards ceremony. A perfect opportunity to combine a passion for cycling with a stay in the splendid setting of the Maremma.
The eighth edition of the Granfondo Poggi di Maremma was held on Sunday, April 19, 2026, following a date change decided by the organizers to avoid overlapping with another local event. The race, valid as the third round of the Circuito Volchem and organized by the Gruppo Ciclistico Castiglionese, confirmed its format with three routes between the sea of Castiglione della Pescaia and the hills of the Maremma.
As per tradition, the start and finish were set on the Lungomare Via Roma, with the race village open from Saturday for material collection.
Start from Lungomare Via Roma near Bagno Granchio. The long routes crossed Vetulonia (Scala Santa climb), Caldana, Ravi, Lago dell'Accesa, Capanne, Massa Marittima, Giuncarico, and Tirli, with four refreshment points at kilometers 34.5, 61.6, 95.2, and 116.4.
Castiglione della Pescaia can be reached by car from the SS1 Aurelia road, taking the Grosseto exit and continuing on the provincial road to the coast. The reference train station is Grosseto, which is connected to Castiglione by local buses. The start and finish are located on the Lungomare Via Roma, near the Bagno Granchio beach club.
Registration is done online via Krono Service. The participation fee varies based on the registration date, with a reduced rate for early bird entries and a surcharge for those registering on-site. The registration includes the race pack, assistance, refreshments along the route, and the final pasta party.
The Maremma spring offers an ideal climate for cycling; however, layered clothing is recommended for the early morning hours. Castiglione della Pescaia has numerous accommodation facilities along the coast, perfect for turning the race into a weekend of sport and relaxation.
