About Poggi di Maremma

The Granfondo Poggi di Maremma is the premier amateur cycling festival in Castiglione della Pescaia, in the province of Grosseto. Every spring, hundreds of cycling enthusiasts set off from the seafront to tackle the rolling hills of the Maremma, passing through historic villages like Vetulonia and Massa Marittima, the Lago dell'Accesa, and scenic vistas overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Three routes (Gran Fondo, Medio Fondo, and cycle-touring) allow everyone, from competitive racers to leisure cyclists, to enjoy a day of sport immersed in one of Tuscany's most beautiful landscapes.

A granfondo in the heart of the Maremma

The Granfondo Poggi di Maremma is one of the most anticipated events in the Tuscan amateur cycling calendar. It takes place in Castiglione della Pescaia, a seaside gem in the province of Grosseto, and attracts hundreds of cyclists from all over Italy every year. The event is organized by the Gruppo Ciclistico Castiglionese and is part of the Circuito Volchem, under the aegis of ACSI Ciclismo.

The charm of this race lies in the contrast between the start on the seafront and the challenging hills of the hinterland: from the sea of Castiglione, you climb towards the poggi (hills) that give the race its name, crossing a territory rich in Etruscan history, abandoned mines, and medieval villages.

The three routes

The event offers three tracks designed for every level:

  • Gran Fondo — approximately 137 km with 1,950 meters of elevation gain, reserved for the most trained athletes.
  • Medio Fondo — approximately 84.7 km with 1,260 meters of elevation gain, for those seeking a challenging but more manageable ride.
  • Cycle-touring — 59 km with 810 meters of elevation gain, dedicated to those who want to ride without the pressure of a stopwatch and enjoy the scenery.

The long routes touch some of the most evocative places in the Maremma of Grosseto: Vetulonia with the famous Scala Santa climb, Caldana, Ravi, the Lago dell'Accesa, Capanne, the medieval city of Massa Marittima, Giuncarico, and Tirli, before returning to the seafront of Castiglione.

An event for the whole territory

The Poggi di Maremma is much more than a race: it is a showcase for the territory of Castiglione della Pescaia and southern Tuscany. The event enjoys the support of the municipal administration, the Maremma Experience Consortium, and the Castiglione Tourist Consortium, which see cycle tourism as a driver for the spring season, when the mild climate of the Maremma coast is ideal for cycling.

The race weekend includes the opening of the village with the collection of race packs, the group start from the seafront, refreshment points along the route, the final pasta party, and the awards ceremony. A perfect opportunity to combine a passion for cycling with a stay in the splendid setting of the Maremma.

Poggi di Maremma — edition 2026

The eighth edition of the Granfondo Poggi di Maremma took place on Sunday, April 19, 2026, in Castiglione della Pescaia, with the start and finish on the seafront. Three routes were offered through the Maremma hills, serving as the third stage of the 2026 Volchem Circuit.

The eighth edition of the Granfondo Poggi di Maremma was held on Sunday, April 19, 2026, following a date change decided by the organizers to avoid overlapping with another local event. The race, valid as the third round of the Circuito Volchem and organized by the Gruppo Ciclistico Castiglionese, confirmed its format with three routes between the sea of Castiglione della Pescaia and the hills of the Maremma.

As per tradition, the start and finish were set on the Lungomare Via Roma, with the race village open from Saturday for material collection.
