The Marciana Marina stop of the major international classical and jazz music festival on the Island of Elba, held in the Church of Santa Chiara d'Assisi.
The Elba Isola Musicale d'Europa Festival is one of the most significant classical music events in all of Tuscany and the Tuscan Archipelago. Born in 1997 from the meeting between artistic director George Edelman and the celebrated Russian violist Yuri Bashmet, it transforms the Island of Elba, in the province of Livorno, into a vast, widespread stage where classical, baroque, contemporary, and jazz music dialogue with the most evocative Mediterranean landscapes.
The concerts are not concentrated in a single venue but span the entire island—from Portoferraio to Capoliveri, from Rio to Marciana, Porto Azzurro, Sant'Ilario, and Marciana Marina. In this smallest municipality of Elba, overlooking the sea with its famous Torre degli Appiani, the festival stops at the Church of Santa Chiara d'Assisi, an intimate and cozy setting that becomes a sounding board for great chamber music for one evening.
The Marciana Marina events are among the most beloved and sought-after evenings of the entire schedule: they take place in the late afternoon, at 6:30 PM, and offer free admission until capacity is reached. The audience gathers in the church in the heart of the seaside village to listen to original programs, often entrusted to young soloists and members of the Elba Festival Orchestra, in a continuous dialogue between classical repertoire, 20th-century authors, and rare chamber music gems.
The overall program brings together over seventy musicians from about twenty different nations each year. Recurring festival guests include names like Martha Argerich, Gidon Kremer, and Mario Brunello, joined by numerous soloists and emerging young talents who also perform within the Elba Festival Orchestra. The format of the Marciana Marina stop, with chamber ensembles and solo duos, allows for close-up attendance of top-tier performances in an intimate space.
The festival is organized by the Associazione Opus 110 with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Tuscany Region, and the Elban municipalities, and has represented a benchmark for music lovers vacationing on Elba for nearly thirty years. The Marciana Marina stop, in the heart of the municipality overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, combines high-quality listening with the charm of a small fishing village.
The 30th edition of the Elba Isola Musicale d'Europa Festival celebrates the event's thirtieth anniversary from August 28 to September 13, 2026, with concerts spread across all the municipalities of the Island of Elba.
In Marciana Marina, the event is set for Sunday, August 30, at 6:30 PM, in the Church of Santa Chiara d'Assisi, with free admission until capacity is reached. The program features string music with Pēteris Vasks' "Castillo interior", Friedrich Hermann's Capriccio, and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's String Octet, performed by eight international musicians, including violinists Liana Gourdjia and cellist Raphael Bell with the strings of the Elba Festival Orchestra.
The overall program brings together world-renowned artists such as Martha Argerich, Gidon Kremer, and Mario Brunello, as well as Pierre Génisson, Danilo Rea, and Peter Bernstein. The final concert with Martha Argerich is expected in Portoferraio on September 13.
