The parade of papier-mâché floats from the districts of Giulianova
The Gran Carnevale Giuliese is the most anticipated winter event in Giulianova, an elegant seaside town in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo. At the heart of the festivities are the six papier-mâché floats—true masterpieces of ingenuity and craftsmanship built by the local districts—which parade along the Lido and through the historic center of Giulianova Alta, drawing in a cheering crowd.
The unique charm of the Carnevale Giuliese lies in its strong sense of community: every neighborhood gets involved by building its own float around an original theme. The parade is brought to life by the districts of Annunziata, Case di Trento, Villa Pozzoni, Paese, Lido, and Colleranesco, each with its own float builders, performers, and costumed groups. Preparation takes months and involves entire families in a spirit of friendly rivalry between the neighborhoods.
The event is divided into two distinct parades. The first brings the Lido to life, with the procession traveling along Viale Orsini from the Church of San Pietro Apostolo to Piazza Fosse Ardeatine. The second, on Shrove Tuesday, winds through the historic center of Giulianova Alta, starting from the square in front of the Sanctuary of the Madonna dello Splendore, continuing along Corso Garibaldi, and ending at the Piazza della Libertà viewpoint, one of the most stunning panoramic spots overlooking the Adriatic.
Over a thousand people, including performers, dancers, and costumed groups, animate the two days with dances, skits, choreography, and the inevitable showers of confetti and sweets for both adults and children. The festival is organized by the Gruppo Carristi del Carnevale Giuliese with the patronage of the Municipality of Giulianova, and over the years, it has established twinning relationships with other major Italian carnivals.
The Gran Carnevale Giuliese has become one of the most popular carnival events on the Abruzzo coast: an opportunity to discover Giulianova in its most festive guise, amidst popular tradition, the art of papier-mâché, and the warm hospitality of its neighborhoods.
The 2026 Gran Carnevale Giuliese brought Giulianova to life with two major parades. The first, on Sunday, February 15, traveled along the Lido via Viale Orsini, from the Church of San Pietro Apostolo to Piazza Fosse Ardeatine. The second, on Tuesday, February 17, crossed the historic center, starting at 3:00 PM from the square in front of the Sanctuary of the Madonna dello Splendore and concluding in Piazza Belvedere.
The stars of the show were the six district floats: Annunziata with "Annunziata Hippy Vibes", Case di Trento with "Rising Sun" inspired by Japan, Villa Pozzoni with a Spanish matador theme, Paese with "The World of Bees", Lido with "La Calavera Catrina and her Mariachis", and Colleranesco with "The Gods of Olympus". The twinning with the Misterbianco Carnival was also confirmed.
Sunday, February 15 — Parade at the Lido: Viale Orsini, from the Church of San Pietro Apostolo to Piazza Fosse Ardeatine.
Tuesday, February 17 (Shrove Tuesday) — Parade in the historic center: departure at 3:00 PM from the Sanctuary of the Madonna dello Splendore square, along Corso Garibaldi, arrival at Piazza Belvedere / Piazza della Libertà.
