The Christmas market in the cloister of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Propezzano

Christmas at the Abbey of Propezzano is an unconventional Christmas market that brings the cloister of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Propezzano to life every December. Located in the municipality of Morro d'Oro, in the province of Teramo, in the heart of the Abruzzo Valley of the Abbeys, the event spans two days where culture, craftsmanship, and gastronomy intertwine beneath the monastery's arches, offering visitors an experience far removed from the typical village market.
The heart of the event is the market exhibition, featuring over thirty selected exhibitors showcasing craftsmanship, design, sustainable fashion, textiles, ceramics, jewelry, and local products. Alongside the market, a food and wine trail highlights the flavors of Abruzzo, with traditional dishes, fusion cuisine proposals from local restaurants, and tastings of the wines produced by the Azienda Agricola Abbazia di Propezzano itself.
The days are punctuated by musical moments and live performances, featuring vinyl DJ sets and live bands, while a space designed for children offers entertainment throughout the event. There are also mini-guided tours of the abbey, which take visitors on a journey to discover the history and architecture of the 14th-century monastic complex.
The Abbey of Santa Maria di Propezzano is one of the jewels of the so-called Valley of the Abbeys. Its origins are linked to the legend of the Virgin's apparition on May 10, 715, to three German pilgrims returning from the Holy Land: tradition tells of a cornel tree, known in dialect as Crognale, which grew miraculously on the site of the apparition. The cloister, with its simple and harmonious forms featuring wide round arches and polygonal pillars, dates back to the 14th century, while the refectory preserves 16th-century frescoes. Celebrating Christmas in this setting means experiencing the holiday in a context of great historical and spiritual charm.
Now firmly established among the Christmas events in the province of Teramo, Christmas at the Abbey is organized by the Azienda Agricola Abbazia di Propezzano in collaboration with the cultural association The Frame. Every year, the event draws visitors from all over Abruzzo, attracted by the blend of tradition, quality craftsmanship, and the unique atmosphere of a monastery immersed in the vineyards of the Morro d'Oro countryside.
