Ten days of allegorical floats, masks, and tradition in the Irno Valley
The Gran Carnevale di Baronissi is an annual event that, in the heart of winter, transforms the town of Baronissi, in the province of Salerno, into a massive open-air celebration. For ten days, the streets and squares are filled with papier-mâché floats, masks, music, and confetti in a festival that engages the entire community and draws visitors from across the Irno Valley and the rest of Campania. It is more than just a parade; it is a collective ritual that marks the town calendar and brings different generations together every year.
The event is organized by the Associazione Gran Carnevale with the support of the Municipality of Baronissi and is the result of collaboration between numerous local associations, not only from Baronissi but also from the neighboring towns of Fisciano, Pellezzano, and Montoro. Participating groups include Maria SS Delle Grazie, Casal Barone Robin Hood, ALVAA, I Ragazzi di Capriglia, ASD Madre Terra, Sogno e Realtà, #84zero84, Insieme Per, Gli Amici di Baronissi, Rione Capo Solofra, Iris, I Ragazzi di Montoro, S. Anna, Luigi e Cecchino Cacciatore, and Il Gabbiano. This network of volunteers is the true engine of the festival, spending months crafting papier-mâché structures, sewing costumes, and preparing the choreography that parades before thousands of spectators.
The most anticipated moment is the grand parade of allegorical floats, which winds through the town center accompanied by costumed groups, dancers, and street performers. Each float tells a story—blending fairy tales, satire, and references to popular culture—born from the craftsmanship of local papier-mâché masters. The municipal administration has frequently highlighted how the creativity of these diverse groups, who dedicate themselves to the community, is the festival's greatest asset. The result is a colorful, vibrant parade where the artistic nature of the floats intertwines with the popular spirit of the procession.
Alongside the parades, the Carnival Village, set up at Largo dei Ferrovieri near the Casa dell'Acqua, is a space dedicated to children, featuring creative workshops, games, entertainment, and the symbolic presence of King Carnival, who is traditionally handed the keys to the city to kick off the festivities. The program also includes classic events:
The closing is steeped in tradition: after the final parade of confetti, floats, and masks, the procession reaches Largo Ambrosoli for the burning of King Carnival. The effigy that symbolically ruled the city during the festival days is set ablaze, following an ancient rite widespread throughout Southern Italy that marks the transition from the time of revelry to Lent. It is the most evocative and well-attended moment of the entire festival, where the square gathers around the fire to bid farewell to the celebration until the following year.
All events at the Gran Carnevale di Baronissi are free of charge. Mayor Anna Petta has noted that the Carnival represents a moment of joy and sharing for the entire community, while Councilor Giuseppe Giordano highlighted the creative value of the floats and the associations that build them. For those visiting the province of Salerno in February, the festival is an opportunity to discover a living popular tradition in a town just a few kilometers from the regional capital that completely transforms for the occasion.
The Gran Carnevale di Baronissi 2026 brought the town center to life from February 7 to 17 with ten days of parades, shows, and workshops. The opening, on Saturday, February 7 at 5:00 PM, coincided with the inauguration of the Carnival Village at Largo dei Ferrovieri, near the Casa dell'Acqua, featuring games, entertainment, and the arrival of King Carnival. On Sunday, February 8 at 10:00 AM, the first grand parade of allegorical floats took place, starting from Piazza Mercato along Via dei Greci and Corso Garibaldi, with costumed groups, dancers, and street performers following the papier-mâché works. Saturday, February 14 featured Carnevale... by Night, the evening parade filled with lights and music, followed on Sunday, February 15 by the Pro Loco in Maschera day in Piazza Municipio. Tuesday, February 17 marked the grand finale with the procession toward Largo Ambrosoli and the traditional burning of King Carnival. The edition, organized by the Associazione Gran Carnevale with the Municipality of Baronissi, saw the participation of fifteen associations from Baronissi, Fisciano, Pellezzano, and Montoro.
