The Madonna of the Agonizing, dressed by Dolce & Gabbana, winds through the alleys of the Madonie

In the town of Polizzi Generosa, an ancient village perched in the heart of the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo, the Good Friday Procession marks the climax of Holy Week. It is considered one of the most silent and poignant processions in all of Sicily: a sober and intense rite of faith that unites the entire local community every year and draws visitors from across the region.
The centerpiece of the procession is the Andalusian-style statue of the Madonna of the Agonizing, housed in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, commonly known as Badia Nuova. The sacred effigy is carried on shoulders out of the church to traverse the village streets, accompanied by the statue of the dead Christ. The streets are illuminated by the candles of the faithful, and the procession moves forward, marked only by the funeral melodies of the band, in an atmosphere heavy with reflection and devotion.
The procession is organized by the Confraternity of Mary Most Holy of the Agonizing, founded in Polizzi Generosa in 1662, with roots dating back to the first half of the 17th century. Over fifty confreres and sisters, dressed in black, precede the Madonna's float. What makes this rite famous is its connection to the fashion designer Domenico Dolce, who was born in Polizzi Generosa: the creative half of the Dolce & Gabbana fashion house donated a refined black lace mantle with gold decorations for the Madonna, as well as the black robes worn by the bearers and the women in the procession. These gifts have earned the event a reputation as one of the most elegant religious ceremonies in the world.
Good Friday is part of the cycle of Easter rites in Polizzi. Holy Thursday features the evocative washing of the feet at the Mother Church, while Holy Saturday includes the blessing of the fire and the lighting of the Paschal Candle. Traditionally, the celebrations unfold from the first Friday to the first Monday after the first full moon of spring, according to the liturgical calendar of Easter.
More than just a religious appointment, the Good Friday of Polizzi Generosa is an authentic identity heritage of the Madonie village. The fusion of centuries-old popular devotion, sacred art, and the unexpected touch of high fashion makes this procession a unique experience in the landscape of Sicilian Easter traditions.
For the 2026 edition of the Good Friday Procession in Polizzi Generosa, no dates or specific details have been published yet. The procession, faithful to a centuries-old tradition, is expected to renew itself during Holy Week with the Andalusian-style statue of the Madonna of the Agonizing, dressed in the black and gold lace mantle donated by Domenico Dolce. The program will be announced by the Confraternity of Mary Most Holy of the Agonizing and local institutions in the weeks leading up to Easter.
The procession departs from the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Badia Nuova) and crosses the historic center of Polizzi Generosa (PA), in the Madonie Park.
By car: from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, take the Tremonzelli or Scillato exit, then follow the provincial roads towards Polizzi Generosa. The village is located at an altitude of approximately 1000 meters. Parking is available in areas outside the historic center, which is pedestrian-only.
The rite takes place on Good Friday evening as part of the Holy Week celebrations.
As this is an evening procession at altitude, we recommend clothing suitable for the spring temperatures of the Madonie. Admission is free.
