The patronal celebrations of the Madonie village, blending faith, processions, and fireworks
The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul is the main religious and popular event in Petralia Soprana, a charming medieval village in the Sicilian hinterland of the Palermo province. Listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy and nestled within the Madonie Park, the town celebrates its patron saints annually around June 29th (the liturgical feast day of the two apostles). The festival spans five days, from June 25th to 29th, blending deep devotion with festive community spirit.
Organized by the Municipality of Petralia Soprana in collaboration with the Parish and the Festival Committee, these celebrations are far more than a religious observance: they represent a moment when the entire village and its hamlets—Madonnuzza, Raffo, Santissima Trinità , Pianello, Pellizzara, Cipampini, and San Giovanni—reunite. In the days leading up to the feast, novenas are held in the Mother Church, dedicated to the two apostles, alongside evocative evening candlelight processions where smaller statues of the saints are carried through the historic center's alleys, accompanied by torches, music, and the local community.
Experiencing the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul means immersing yourself in the most authentic soul of inland Sicily, far from mass tourism routes. At an altitude of 1,147 meters, with its Baroque churches and panoramic views of the Madonie, Petralia Soprana provides the perfect backdrop for a festival that weaves together devotion, folklore, and conviviality. It is a unique opportunity to discover a village that keeps its traditions perfectly intact.
The 2026 Feast of Saints Peter and Paul in Petralia Soprana will take place from June 25th to 29th, 2026, culminating on June 29th. The dates are confirmed by the village's event calendar.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (artist names, precise times, and guests for the Piazza Duomo evenings) will be announced by the Festival Committee in the weeks leading up to the event. Based on past editions, the usual schedule is expected: novenas in the Mother Church, evening candlelight processions, the arrival of sacred effigies, the performance of the Stendardieri Sopranesi, the solemn procession on June 29th, and the closing fireworks. For the final program, we recommend following the official channels of the Parish and the Municipality of Petralia Soprana.
The detailed 2026 program will be published by the Festival Committee in the weeks preceding the event. The usual structure, as documented in recent editions, includes:
Artist names and final times for 2026 have not yet been announced.
Petralia Soprana is located in the heart of the Madonie, in the province of Palermo. By car, take the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, exit at Tre Monzelli or Irosa, then follow the SS120 towards Petralia. The nearest train station is Castellana-Madonie on the Palermo-Catania line, connected to the village by local buses.
The celebrations take place from June 25th to 29th, with the main events culminating on June 29th, the day of the patron saints.
All festival events (processions, square concerts, fireworks) are free and open to the public.
Given the altitude, evenings can be cool even in summer: bring a light jacket. Wear comfortable shoes to navigate the steep alleys of the historic center.
