The patronal feast of Isnello featuring processions, candlelight vigils, and ancient hymns in the Sicilian dialect
The Saint Nicholas of Bari Festival is the primary religious and cultural celebration in Isnello, a charming village nestled in the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo, Sicily. While the liturgical feast falls on December 6th, the public festivities in honor of the patron saint take place annually from September 5th to 7th. The patronage of Saint Nicholas over the town of Isnello dates back to around 1620, and for centuries, the community has gathered around its protector in a blend of faith, music, and collective identity.
The highlight of the festival occurs on September 7th. In the afternoon, the solemn procession begins: the statue of Saint Nicholas, a precious 15th-century wooden sculpture, is placed on an ornate pedestal and carried on the shoulders of devotees through the main streets of the village. The procession is led by banners representing the various saints celebrated in Isnello throughout the year, accompanied by a marching band, civil and military authorities, barefoot devotees, and the entire local population. In the morning, a solemn sung Mass is held with the Confraternity of Saint Nicholas and the festival committee.
On the eve of the feast, as darkness falls, a moving candlelight vigil winds through the historic center. Children and the faithful walk through the village streets holding lit torches while singing the ancient Lodi a San Nicola, traditional compositions in the Sicilian dialect dating back to 1820. It remains one of the most emotional and identity-defining moments of the entire Madonie festival.
The musical heart of the celebration is the frottola (or frottula). During the procession, the band plays marches, and at pre-established points, the parade stops for the performance of ancient, original musical compositions in the Sicilian dialect dedicated to the Patron Saint. The frottole of Isnello are officially inscribed in the Register of Intangible Heritage of the Sicilian Region (REIS), a recognition that testifies to the value of a tradition that has survived for centuries thanks to the masters and musicians of the local band.
Amidst the stone alleys of one of the most characteristic villages in the Madonie, the festival blends liturgical solemnity with folk traditions and village celebrations, featuring shows, entertainment, and traditional fireworks. The Saint Nicholas of Bari Festival is a precious opportunity to discover Isnello and the popular culture of this corner of inland Sicily.
The 2026 Saint Nicholas of Bari Festival returns to Isnello (Palermo) from September 5th to 7th, reviving the ritual that has marked the devotion of the Madonie village for centuries. The calendar follows tradition: an octave of preparation with the recitation of the rosary, the eve's candlelight vigil with the singing of the ancient Lodi to Saint Nicholas, a solemn sung Mass, and, on the afternoon of September 7th, the grand procession of the wooden statue carried on shoulders through the village streets, accompanied by the frottole performed by the marching band.
At the moment, the detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been fully published: precise times and side events will be announced by the festival committee in the weeks leading up to the feast.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Isnello (PA), with the procession departing from the Mother Church of Saint Nicholas of Bari, located on Via Matrice 2.
By car: From the A19/A20 motorway, reach Cefalù, then continue towards the interior of the Madonie mountains until you reach Isnello (approx. 20 km). By train: Take the train to Cefalù station on the Palermo-Messina line, then continue by bus or car.
