The patronal feast of Bompietro, the heart of Marian devotion in the Madonie mountains

In the heart of the Madonie, at an altitude of 685 meters, the small town of Bompietro (province of Palermo, Sicily) celebrates its patron saint, Maria Santissima delle Grazie, every year. The feast, which traditionally falls on the fourth Sunday of August, is the most heartfelt moment of the year for the local community: a centuries-old tradition that weaves together religious devotion, the village's identity, and popular joy.
The feast is preceded by the traditional quindicina, a fifteen-day period during which a small statue of the Madonna delle Grazie is carried in procession by the women of the village from neighborhood to neighborhood. The statue is welcomed into the homes of the faithful, where the chaplet and the Holy Rosary are recited, followed by Holy Mass. It is an intimate and widespread ritual that involves the entire town and spiritually prepares the community for the solemn days.
The climax takes place over two days. On the vigil, the precious statue of the Mother of Grace is carried in procession through the main streets of the village, accompanied by confraternities and civil and religious authorities, along with the fine wooden statues of the patriarch Saint Joseph and the Most Holy Crucifix. On the day of the feast, after the solemn Mass celebrated in the morning, the procession of the Madonna's statue is renewed in the afternoon, crossing most of the town's streets amidst the emotion and prayers of the faithful.
Alongside the religious dimension, the feast offers a rich secular program: the brass band accompanies the most important moments, while evening shows, entertainment, and fireworks enliven the village squares. The patronal feast is part of a particularly lively August for Bompietro: on August 23rd, the Emigrants' Feast is celebrated, which brings back to the village the many Bompietro natives scattered around the world, creating an atmosphere of reunion and community that prepares for the great patronal feast.
Visiting Bompietro during the feast means discovering an authentic village in the Madonie: the Mother Church dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, built at the end of the 18th century, the water springs, the hamlet of Locati, and the flavors of the local gastronomic tradition, from cheeses and dairy products to cured meats, wines, and traditional sweets. The feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie is the ideal opportunity to experience the hospitality and faith of this corner of the Madonie Park.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie in Bompietro does not yet have official dates or a published program. Based on centuries-old custom, the celebrations will be held on the fourth Sunday of August, with the preparatory 'quindicina', the vigil procession, and the solemn procession on the day of the feast, accompanied by the brass band and fireworks. For the final program, please refer to the announcements from the Municipality of Bompietro and the parish.
Bompietro is located in the south-eastern Madonie, in the province of Palermo. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Tre Monzelli or Irosa exit), continuing towards the Petralie. The nearest train station is Irosa-Bompietro on the Palermo-Catania line.
The feast traditionally takes place on the fourth Sunday of August, with the vigil on the previous day and the quindicina in the fifteen days leading up to it.
All religious and secular events are free and open to the public.
It is recommended to book your accommodation in advance in the nearby villages (Petralia Soprana, Petralia Sottana, Gangi), as Bompietro has limited lodging capacity.
