The patronal feast of Castellana Sicula, in the heart of the Madonie Park
The Saint Francis of Paola Festival is the most cherished religious and popular event in Castellana Sicula, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo located at an altitude of approximately 765 meters, at the southern gateway to the Madonie Park. The town, also known as the "City of Murals" for the wall paintings that have animated its alleys since 1994, preserves in its Mother Church, dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola, the deep bond between the community and its patron saint.
The highlight of the festival is the solemn evening procession of the saint's statue, which travels through the main streets of the town accompanied by civil and military authorities, confraternities, and committees. The parade of the simulacrum, preceded by liturgical celebrations in the Mother Church, attracts a large turnout of faithful and emigrants who return to the town specifically for the patronal feast each year.
At the end of the procession, the sky over Castellana Sicula lights up with a fireworks display, while the evening continues in the square with concerts, cover band performances, and moments of music, lights, and sharing that enliven the center until late at night.
The Saint Francis of Paola Festival is not just a devotional appointment: it represents a moment of strong collective identity for Castellana Sicula and its hamlets, including Calcarelli and Nociazzi. The days of celebration are enriched by musical, folkloric, and entertainment events, as well as the opportunity to discover the typical flavors of the Madonie, from local cured meats and cheeses to almond pastries.
For those visiting the area, the festival is also an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Sicilian hinterland, immersed in the mountain landscape of the Madonie Park, amidst nature, mural art, and popular traditions.
The 2026 Saint Francis of Paola Festival will renew the appointment with the town's patronal feast in Castellana Sicula, in the heart of the Madonie Park. As per tradition, the central moment will be the solemn procession of the patron saint's statue through the streets of the center, followed by the fireworks display and festivities in the square with music and entertainment.
The exact dates and the complete program of the 2026 edition have not yet been officially released: it is recommended to consult the channels of the Municipality of Castellana Sicula for updates.
