The processional floats of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows through the streets of Bagheria
The Good Friday Procession is one of the most anticipated and well-attended events in the religious tradition of Bagheria, a city in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, in Sicily. Every year, on the afternoon of Good Friday, the floats of the Dead Christ and the Most Holy Mary of Sorrows emerge from the 18th-century Church of the Holy Sepulchre to traverse the historic center in a solemn parade, accompanied by a vast crowd of the faithful.
The rite is managed by the Confraternity of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Dead Christ, founded in 1827 within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre under the title of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. The members of the confraternity carry the exquisite 18th-century statue of Our Lady of Sorrows on their shouldersโa wooden sculpture venerated on the church's high altar within a precious marble structure with twisted columns. Beside her, the float of the Dead Christ is paraded, laid out according to the iconography of the Passion.
The procession departs from Piazza Santo Sepolcro and winds slowly along the main arteries of the center: Corso Butera, Via L. Maggiore, Via Sac. A. A. Sammarco, Via Luca Giordano, Via Senatore Scaduto, Via O. Tomaselli, Via Angiรฒ, Via Litterio, Via L. Sturzo, and Corso Umberto, before returning to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Along the route, the rhythmic pace of the bearers, the sound of funeral marches played by brass bands, and the hushed silence of the faithful create an atmosphere of intense popular devotion.
Included in the calendar of devotional rites for Holy Week by the Diocese of Palermo, the Bagheria procession is considered one of the oldest and most beloved in the region. It is a manifestation of faith and identity that, every Good Friday, unites generations of Bagheresi around the simulacra of the Passion, in an event that weaves together spirituality, sacred art, and community memory.
In 2026, the Good Friday Procession in Bagheria returned on April 3rd, the day of Good Friday. The edition was announced by the Parish of the Holy Sepulchre as part of the Holy Week program, renewing a rite that has linked the Bagheria community to the simulacra of the Passion since 1827. The parade, which departed from Piazza Santo Sepolcro, crossed the historic center with the floats of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows, accompanied by the funeral marches of the bands and the participation of confreres and the faithful.
Every year on Good Friday, in the late afternoon. In 2025, the procession took place on Friday, April 18th, starting at 4:00 PM; in 2026, Good Friday falls on April 3rd.
