The patronal feast of Ficarazzi, blending faith, the historical Castellana pageant, and the procession of the wooden Crucifix
The Feast of the Holy Crucifix of the Graces is the patronal festival of Ficarazzi, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea on the road to Bagheria, in Sicily. It is celebrated every year on September 14th, the day the Church commemorates the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, bringing the entire Ficarazzi community together around one of its most cherished identity symbols.
The focus of the devotion is the wooden Crucifix attributed to Francesco Pitorno, known as Frà Umile da Petralia, one of the most famous woodcarvers of the 17th-century Sicilian school. The work, considered by the faithful to be unique in its artistic and spiritual intensity, is called by the locals the "Crucifix of the Graces" due to the countless graces attributed to its intercession over the centuries. Today, it is kept in the Mother Church dedicated to Sant'Atanasio, the religious heart of the town.
The element that makes this festival unique is the historical re-enactment of the Castellana, which intertwines the sacred and the profane. After the mass, a storyteller narrates the events of the noble Giardina family: Prince Luigi Giardina and his wife Giulia Massa Grimaldi, lords of the 16th-century palace-castle, commissioned the Crucifix and later donated it to the parish out of deep devotion. Two figures in sumptuous period costumes, descending the steps of the monumental castle, symbolically re-enact that ancient handover, accompanied by a marching band and a historical pageant in 17th-century attire.
Once the handover of the Crucifix is complete, the faithful join the procession that winds through the main streets of the center, including Corso Umberto I, ending in Piazza Santi Patroni, at the foot of the 18th-century castle. The day concludes with a traditional fireworks display that illuminates the sky above the town, while the festival days are also filled with convivial and gastronomic moments linked to local traditions, such as the famous festival of the Ficarazzi sfincione.
Between popular faith, historical memory, and folklore, the Feast of the Holy Crucifix of the Graces represents one of the most heartfelt events in the calendar of Ficarazzi and the Palermo hinterland. Authorities and representatives from neighboring municipalities have always participated in the procession, testifying to the deep roots of this tradition in the province of Palermo.
