The patronal feast of the seaside village of Porticello, featuring barefoot processions and the evocative sea procession towards Capo Zafferano.
The Madonna del Lume Festival in Porticello is the beating heart of this ancient seaside village, part of the municipality of Santa Flavia, in the metropolitan city of Palermo, Sicily. According to popular tradition, the sacred image of Maria SS. del Lume was found at sea, tangled in fishermen's nets near Capo Zafferano. Since then, the Madonna has been venerated as the patron and protector of the sea and the people of Porticello, in an unbreakable bond between faith and the fishing industry that has animated this maritime community for centuries.
Celebrations are traditionally concentrated on the first Sunday of October and the following Monday, but the festival spans a wider period: in 2026, the full program runs from October 1st to 11th. Everything begins in late September with the novena and the solemn triduum in honor of Maria SS. del Lume, featuring rosary recitations in homes and streets, the lighting of luminarie (decorative lights) on the church square, and floral tributes at the port.
The most anticipated moment is the solemn procession: in the afternoon, the sacred image is taken from the altar by the faithful, who seek to kiss the glass protecting the icon, and placed on the vara (a ceremonial float). The vara, carried on the shoulders of barefoot devotees, crosses the entire village accompanied by brass bands and a moved crowd, stopping at Piano Stenditore and Santa Nicolicchia, where the re-enactment of the discovery of the painting takes place.
The Sunday following the main festival features the most scenic celebration: the sea procession towards Capo Zafferano, the site of the discovery, where a small chapel dedicated to the Madonna stands. The statue is loaded onto a boat and accompanied by a procession of decorated fishing vessels, while a moving procession on land reaches the same promontory for the blessing of the sea.
Alongside religious services, the days are enlivened by a rich secular program: drummers, brass bands, Sicilian carts, popular games like the traditional pole-climbing contest at the port, market stalls, street food with roasted chestnuts and nougat, cabaret, and evening concerts in the square. Closing the festivities are the unmissable firework displays, famous for the thunderous and long "masculiata" that illuminates the sky above the village and its port.
Experiencing the Madonna del Lume Festival means immersing yourself in the most authentic soul of maritime Sicily: an entire community gathering around its patron saint, amidst devotion, memory, and popular celebration. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover Porticello and Santa Flavia, the local Baroque villas, and the breathtaking scenery of Capo Zafferano and the Gulf of Palermo.
For the 2026 edition, celebrations in honor of Maria SS. del Lume are held in Porticello, a district of Santa Flavia (Palermo), from October 1st to 11th. The festival opens in late September with the novena and solemn triduum, culminating in the key days of the first Sunday of October and the following Monday, with the grand afternoon procession of the vara.
All traditional moments are confirmed: the re-enactment of the painting's discovery at Santa Nicolicchia, the passage through Piano Stenditore, drummers and brass bands, popular games, market stalls, and evening concerts. In conclusion, on the following Sunday, the sea procession towards Capo Zafferano takes place with a parade of fishing boats and the blessing of the sea. The detailed secular program, with times and shows, will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival.
By car: From the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, take the Bagheria exit, then continue towards Santa Flavia and Porticello.
