The “Rosso di Rose” Festival in the village of the Signal Tower
Every year in May, the hills of the Asti and Alessandria Monferrato come alive for Golosaria among the Monferrato Castles, the widespread event created by food and wine journalist Paolo Massobrio with the Club di Papillon. Over forty towns in the provinces of Asti and Alessandria — “the most castle-rich area in Europe” — transform for a weekend into one big celebration of taste, art, and landscape. Among these villages, Viarigi stands out, a small municipality in the Province of Asti, Piedmont, offering one of the most poetic stops of the event.
In Viarigi, Golosaria takes the name of the “Rosso di Rose” Festival, a tribute to biodiversity and the protection of pollinators that revolves around the Diffused Garden project, an urban redevelopment initiative that has transformed corners and views of the town into flowering green spaces. Visitors are invited to a slow walk among roses and flowers, with stops, stories, and tastings that weave together nature and local flavors.
As in all Golosaria stops, food and wine are the protagonists in Viarigi: tastings of typical Monferrato products and local wines — from Barbera d'Asti to Grignolino, from Ruchè to local whites — accompany the visit. The day ends with a convivial aperitif at Ristorante Roma, with rose-scented dishes and a DJ set, to extend the celebration into the evening.
Viarigi is part of one of the thematic itineraries that Golosaria designs every year to invite visitors to discover multiple villages in a single trip, along with Altavilla Monferrato, Fubine, Quattordio, and Quargnento. It is the ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in the hilly landscape of Monferrato, a UNESCO World Heritage site, among vineyards, castles, and small villages where the tradition of good living is still alive.
The 2026 edition, the twentieth, celebrated the anniversary of Golosaria with an extraordinary program: over 40 municipalities involved, the Castle of Casale Monferrato as headquarters with about 50 food producers, guided tastings of Barbera d'Asti and Monferrato wines, theatrical performances, markets, walks, and vintage car rallies.
In Viarigi, on Saturday, May 16, the “Rosso di Rose” Festival brought the village to life: at 3:00 PM, the inauguration of the exhibition “The Secret Garden” by Piergiorgio Panelli at San Silverio, followed by the walk among the roses and flowers of the Diffused Garden with stops and tastings. At the Signal Tower, the exhibition “Inside the Garden” by Paola Grassi and a demonstration of building garden borders using natural materials. To close, an aperitif at Ristorante Roma with rose-scented dishes and a DJ set.
Viarigi was included in the itinerary that also includes Altavilla Monferrato, Fubine, Quattordio, and Quargnento.
Viarigi is located in the Province of Asti, in Monferrato. By car: from the A21 Turin-Piacenza motorway, take the Asti Est exit, then provincial roads towards Monferrato (about 20 km from Asti). By train: Asti station, then local bus connections.
The event takes place over a weekend in mid-May. Activities in Viarigi (exhibitions, walks, tastings) are concentrated on Saturday.
Wear comfortable shoes for the walk in the Diffused Garden and the climb to the Signal Tower. To experience more stops on the itinerary, it is advisable to stay in one of the farmhouses, wine resorts, or B&Bs in the hills. Full program and updates on the official Golosaria website.
