Marigliano's charity festival dedicated to gnocchi served in traditional terracotta pots
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Gnocco nel Pignatiello Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Marigliano, a town in the province of Naples, Campania. Every year in May, the festival draws families, groups of friends, and visitors from the surrounding Nola area to enjoy a simple, iconic dish served in the very vessel that gives the event its name. However, this is more than just a food festival: it was born and continues to thrive as a charitable initiative, with all proceeds donated to the works of the Missionaries of the Divine Redemption, the congregation founded by Father Arturo D'Onofrio.
The pignatiello is a small terracotta pot used in traditional Campanian cooking for slow-cooking and serving food directly at the table. The handmade gnocchi prepared by the festival volunteers arrive at the table steaming in these pots, which retain heat and give the dish the rustic flavor of kitchens from the past. It is a dish that tells the story of the rural culture of the Nola-Vesuvius area, defined by humble ingredients and great conviviality.
The first edition took place on May 8, 2010, at the Anselmi Institute in Marigliano, the historical home of the event, thanks to the commitment of volunteers and parish families. Since then, the festival has grown year after year, surpassing a dozen editions and becoming a cornerstone of local solidarity. Over time, the funds raised have supported concrete projects by the Missionaries of the Divine Redemption, including the construction of educational facilities and a children's home for those in need in Neiva, Colombia.
In traditional editions, the festival spans an entire weekend, with the Anselmi Institute grove transformed into a communal dining area. Alongside the signature dish, food stalls offer other specialties of Campanian popular cuisine:
The program for larger editions has included musical evenings with local bands, dance performances, prayer sessions, raffles, and activities for families and children. Everything is managed by the free labor of volunteers who handle the cooking, table service, and hospitality.
For Marigliano, the Gnocco nel Pignatiello Festival is much more than a culinary event: it is an occasion for the community to gather, share a meal, and support a charitable cause. The formula, unchanged over the years, is that of an authentic popular feast, without grand displays, where the quality of the food and the participation of the people matter more than any promotion. Visitors from outside will find a direct and sincere way to experience the cuisine and hospitality of this corner of the province of Naples.
Marigliano is located in the plain northeast of Mount Vesuvius, just a few kilometers from Nola and well-connected to Naples. Its Ducal Castle, which exceptionally hosted the festival in 2025, is one of the city's iconic monuments and one of the most remarkable castle complexes in the Vesuvius area. A visit to the festival can therefore easily be combined with exploring the historic town center and nearby destinations in the Neapolitan province.
There are currently no official dates for the 2026 edition of the Gnocco nel Pignatiello Festival. Over the years, the event has always taken place in May in Marigliano, in the province of Naples, hosted at the Anselmi Institute and, in 2025, at the Ducal Castle.
The event maintains its dual nature: traditional Campanian cuisine, with handmade gnocchi served in terracotta pots, and its charitable purpose, with proceeds going to the works of the Missionaries of the Divine Redemption founded by Father Arturo D'Onofrio. Participation in the lunch usually requires mandatory reservation, with limited seating.
We recommend checking information directly with the organizers before planning your visit: this page will be updated as soon as the calendar and program for the 2026 edition are released.
