The comics, music, and film festival celebrating the spirit of Tuono Pettinato
Giorni di Tuono is the annual event that Pisa dedicates to Tuono Pettinato (the stage name of Andrea Paggiaro), a local cartoonist who passed away prematurely in 2021 and remains one of the most original and ironic voices in contemporary Italian comics. Promoted by the Fondazione Tuono Pettinato with the support of the Municipality of Pisa, the festival transforms the city center for several days into a widespread circuit of exhibitions, meetings, concerts, screenings, and workshops, all with free admission.
The festival's hallmark is the intersection of different creative languages: comics weave together with live music, cult cinema, theater, and podcasts. It offers an "ironic and sly look at deciphering reality," as the organizers describe it, staying true to Pettinato's unique sensibility. The artistic direction is led by Antonio Capellupo and Guido Siliotto, who curate a program each year that brings together big names in Italian and international comics, young talents, and experimental projects.
Giorni di Tuono has no single venue: it thrives in Pisa's cultural spaces, from the Museo della Grafica on the Lungarno Galileo Galilei to the Cineclub Arsenale, from La Nunziatina to the Cantiere San Bernardo, and from Studio Gennai to the River Art Lab, as well as various local clubs and bookstores. This approach makes the festival a perfect opportunity to discover the independent cultural hubs of the city in the heart of Tuscany.
At the heart of the festival are the Tuono Pettinato Award and the Tuono Pettinato Scholarship, recognitions that celebrate an established author and a young talent in the world of comics each year, featuring personal exhibitions set up for the occasion. The festival also hosts an annual exhibition of original plates by Pettinato himself.
Free, participatory, and deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of the Municipality and Province of Pisa, Giorni di Tuono has become one of the most anticipated events for comics and pop culture fans in Tuscany, capable of attracting authors from all over Italy while maintaining a profoundly local and affectionate soul dedicated to the figure who inspires it.
The fifth edition of Giorni di Tuono animated Pisa from June 11 to 14, 2026, with a preview on Monday, June 8, at the SMS Library for the inauguration of the "Magnifici Lavativi" student drawing exhibition. Organized by the Fondazione Tuono Pettinato with the support of the Municipality of Pisa, the event confirmed its formula as a widespread, free festival, weaving together comics, music, cinema, and theater in the spirit of irony that was the hallmark of the Pisan artist. The edition's poster was designed by Mario Natangelo, winner of the Tuono Pettinato Award.
Pisa is easily accessible by train (Pisa Centrale station) and by plane (Galileo Galilei International Airport). The festival venues are located in the historic center and are within walking distance.
All events are free to attend.
