Grain milling days at South Tyrol's only elevator mill
Every summer, the Naturparkhaus Trudner Horn, the visitor center for the Monte Corno Nature Park located in Truden im Naturpark, opens the doors of its historic mill for the Getreidemahltage, or grain milling days. It is a rare and fascinating event that allows visitors to rediscover an ancient craft and a daily task from the past: transforming cereal grains into flour.
The centerpiece of the event is the Elevatormühle, a restored elevator mill that is over three stories high and fully operational—the only one of its kind in all of South Tyrol. During the demonstrations, miller Valentin Pernter sets the machine in motion, illustrates its ingenious mechanism step by step, and recounts how flour was once produced from grain grown in the fields of the lower Adige Valley.
The flour milled during these summer days is more than just a demonstration; it is put to use. In the traditional wood-fired oven set up next to the visitor center, bread is baked just as it was in our grandmothers' time, with the opportunity for visitors to taste it. It is a complete journey from grain to table that combines rural culture, folk traditions, and the genuine flavors of the South Tyrolean mountains.
The Naturparkhaus Trudner Horn is the gateway to the Monte Corno Nature Park (Trudner Horn), one of the most evocative protected areas in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in Trentino-South Tyrol. Forests, meadows, and trails provide the backdrop for an event that highlights the bond between humanity, nature, and agricultural tradition. The Getreidemahltage are an ideal opportunity for families, ethnography enthusiasts, and visitors wishing to discover the most authentic side of the lower Adige Valley.
In 2026, the grain milling days at the Naturparkhaus Trudner Horn are scheduled for three Friday afternoons: July 24, July 31, and August 27, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Miller Valentin Pernter leads the demonstrations at the restored elevator mill, explaining the operation of the historic Elevatormühle and ancient flour production techniques.
The resulting flour is then processed and transformed into bread, baked in the traditional wood-fired oven next to the visitor center and offered for tasting. Admission is free, but reservation is mandatory: for info and registration, call +39 0471 869247 or email [email protected].
