A walk through the Gavi DOCG vineyards, between ravioli and white wine
The Gavilonga is one of the most beloved food and wine events in the area of Gavi, a hilltop village in the province of Alessandria, in the southeast of Piedmont. It is not just a simple tasting; it is a true walking tour that allows you to discover the hills of Gavi DOCG on footโthe first Piedmontese white wine to obtain the Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin, produced from the Cortese grape variety.
Along the route, you will walk through vineyards, paths, and woods, with scheduled stops at the wineries of the appellation. At each stage, participants are welcomed by producers with a glass of Gavi and local gastronomic specialties. It is a slow and convivial way to get to know the wine landscape, talk to the winemakers, and savor typical products directly where they are born.
The signature dish of the day is the Gavi raviolo, whose recipe has roots deep in local tradition. The walk traditionally concludes with the final ravioli feast, a convivial moment that brings all the walkers together around the table, often accompanied by vegetable pie and other local delicacies.
Gavilonga was conceived and organized by the Ordine Obertengo dei Cavalieri del Raviolo e del Gavi, a food and wine brotherhood founded in 1973 with the aim of enhancing and promoting the Gavi raviolo and Cortese wine. The event was born from an intuition of Carletto Bergaglio, a historic pharmacist and passionate food and wine expert from the town, and has since become a highly anticipated appointment for lovers of good food, fine wine, and walking through the hills.
Gavilonga is perfect for those who want to combine a passion for wine with a day in the open air, in good company and in contact with the landscape. Registration is limited, and groups depart in staggered intervals throughout the morning; therefore, booking in advance is recommended. It is an experience suitable for both oenology enthusiasts and those who simply wish to spend a different kind of Sunday among the Gavi vineyards.
