The centuries-old fair in San Nicandro Garganico showcasing livestock, local products, and Gargano traditions

The Gargano October Fair is one of the longest-running popular events in the province of Foggia and the entire Apulia region. It takes place in San Nicandro Garganico, a town nestled on the northern slopes of the Gargano promontory, and every autumn it attracts exhibitors, producers, and visitors from across the Capitanata area. With over 180 editions behind it, it is a landmark event that weaves together the economy, tradition, and culture of the territory.
The roots of the fair go back to a decree from 1826, when King Ferdinand sought to regulate the complex matter of shepherding in the Tavoliere delle Puglie: the Municipality of San Nicandro Garganico was authorized to hold an annual fair, which began as a major livestock fair and cattle market. It fell during the period when, after September 8th, seasonal labor contracts were renewed and the countryside took a break: it was the ideal moment to stock up on animals, tools, and supplies for the new agricultural year. The coincidence with the month dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary also enriched the event with a deeply felt religious dimension.
Over time, the October Fair has evolved, transforming into a showcase of excellence in the agri-food, craft, and cultural sectors of the Gargano, without losing its connection to its rural roots. The heart of the exhibition is the Centro Fiera, which hosts stands dedicated to crafts, agri-food, and zero-mile products. Among the highlights are local productions, such as the famous dried flowers of San Nicandro Garganico, and the flavors of the Mediterranean diet.
Promoted by the Municipal Administration of San Nicandro Garganico with the support of the Apulia Region and the collaboration of local artisans, the fair is both an economic engine and a community moment. For visitors, it represents an authentic opportunity to discover the less touristy side of the Garganoโthe one linked to the land, livestock, and traditional trades, just a few kilometers from the beaches and coastal lakes of Lesina and Varano.
The 2026 edition of the Gargano October Fair in San Nicandro Garganico is expected, as per tradition, in the month of October. At the moment, the official dates and program have not yet been announced. The event, which celebrated its 183rd edition in 2025, is expected to feature the usual rich schedule of agri-food and craft stands, tastings of local products, workshops, and shows. For updated information, it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Municipality of San Nicandro Garganico.
