The gastronomic festival celebrating Tuscan fried specialties in Piazza della Resistenza, Monteroni d'Arbia
In the heart of the Val d'Arbia, just a few kilometres from Siena along the historic Via Cassia, the town of Monteroni d'Arbia hosts one of its most beloved spring events: the Fried Food Festival. For two weekends, the central Piazza della Resistenza fills with long tables, the aroma of sizzling oil, and the buzz of local conversation, celebrating one of the most genuine traditions of Tuscan cuisine: frying done the old-fashioned way.
The event is organized by the Associazione Le Masse, with the support of the Municipality of Monteroni d'Arbia, and has long been a landmark for residents and visitors alike. Proceeds support the association's activities and the local community: behind the fryers are volunteers who prepare, cook, and serve every evening, keeping alive a festival that blends culinary heritage, social connection, and the identity of the Sienese territory.
The star of the show is, naturally, fried food, served in many delicious variations. Every evening, the stalls offer fried meat and vegetables, but the festival also features themed nights that draw food lovers from far and wide:
Everything is paired with local wines in a friendly, accessible setting.
Beyond the food, the Fried Food Festival offers nightly entertainment, with live music and dancing that keep the square lively until late. Among the side events, the final Saturday hosts a craft market starting in the late afternoon, perfect for browsing handmade goods and creative crafts before dinner.
The festival typically takes place in May, spread over two weekends, with food stalls opening every evening from around 7:30 PM. Admission is free. Reaching Monteroni d'Arbia is easy from both Siena and the Val d'Orcia, and the central square provides the perfect setting for an authentic Tuscan evening, far from the crowded tourist trails.
The 15th edition of the Fried Food Festival was held in Monteroni d'Arbia from May 15 to 23, 2026, spread over two weekends (May 15-16-17 and 22-23). The heart of the event, as per tradition, was Piazza della Resistenza with the food stalls of the Associazione Le Masse open every evening from 7:30 PM.
The menu confirmed the most popular themed nights: fried fish on Friday, fried lamb on Saturday, and fried lamb and brains on Sunday, in addition to the usual fried meat and vegetable dishes. Live music and dancing accompanied the dinners every evening. On Saturday, May 23, starting in the afternoon (from 5 PM), the craft market was added. Free admission for all evenings.
Live music and dancing every evening in Piazza della Resistenza.
Saturday, May 23, craft market from 5 PM.
Monteroni d'Arbia is located along the Via Cassia (SR2), about 15 km south of Siena. By car, it is easily accessible from the Siena-Bettolle highway or the Cassia road. By train, the Monteroni d'Arbia station is on the Siena-Grosseto line. The events take place in Piazza della Resistenza, in the town centre.
Food stalls are open every evening from approximately 7:30 PM. Admission to the event is free.
The themed nights (fish on Friday, lamb on Saturday) are very popular: it is best to arrive early to avoid queues at the stalls. The final Saturday is enhanced by the afternoon craft market.
