About Fried Food Festival

Every spring, the Fried Food Festival transforms Piazza della Resistenza in Monteroni d'Arbiaโ€”located in the heart of the Val d'Arbia, near Sienaโ€”into a vibrant community hub dedicated to the tradition of Tuscan frying. Over two weekends, the food stalls run by the Associazione Le Masse serve up fried meat and vegetable dishes every evening, featuring themed nights dedicated to fish and lamb, all accompanied by live music, entertainment, and dancing. Free admission and authentic village atmosphere guaranteed.

The Fried Food Festival of Monteroni d'Arbia

In the heart of the Val d'Arbia, just a few kilometres from Siena along the historic Via Cassia, the town of Monteroni d'Arbia hosts one of its most beloved spring events: the Fried Food Festival. For two weekends, the central Piazza della Resistenza fills with long tables, the aroma of sizzling oil, and the buzz of local conversation, celebrating one of the most genuine traditions of Tuscan cuisine: frying done the old-fashioned way.

A Community Tradition

The event is organized by the Associazione Le Masse, with the support of the Municipality of Monteroni d'Arbia, and has long been a landmark for residents and visitors alike. Proceeds support the association's activities and the local community: behind the fryers are volunteers who prepare, cook, and serve every evening, keeping alive a festival that blends culinary heritage, social connection, and the identity of the Sienese territory.

What to Eat

The star of the show is, naturally, fried food, served in many delicious variations. Every evening, the stalls offer fried meat and vegetables, but the festival also features themed nights that draw food lovers from far and wide:

  • Friday is dedicated to fried fish, a local favourite;
  • Saturday features fried lamb, a traditional peasant dish;
  • Sunday offers the most daring menu, including fried lamb and brains, for those seeking the most authentic and ancient flavours.

Everything is paired with local wines in a friendly, accessible setting.

Music, Dancing, and Markets

Beyond the food, the Fried Food Festival offers nightly entertainment, with live music and dancing that keep the square lively until late. Among the side events, the final Saturday hosts a craft market starting in the late afternoon, perfect for browsing handmade goods and creative crafts before dinner.

When and Where

The festival typically takes place in May, spread over two weekends, with food stalls opening every evening from around 7:30 PM. Admission is free. Reaching Monteroni d'Arbia is easy from both Siena and the Val d'Orcia, and the central square provides the perfect setting for an authentic Tuscan evening, far from the crowded tourist trails.
