Ambra Snail Festival

A tradition renewed for over forty years

In the heart of Valdambra, in the village of Ambra (part of the Bucine municipality in the province of Arezzo), the Snail Festival has been the quintessential local celebration for over four decades. Organized with passion by the Pro Loco Ambra, the event transforms the historic center and Piazza del Teatro into a major gathering point for locals, Valdambra residents, and visitors from across Tuscany, all eager to enjoy a dish that has become a true symbol of local identity.

Snails, the stars of the table

The undisputed star is the snail, prepared following traditional village recipes and served at the food stalls set up in Piazza del Teatro. Alongside this specialty, the festival kitchen offers sliced steak, pizza baked in a wood-fired oven, and other regional delicacies, all paired with local Valdambra wine and craft beers. Even those who aren't fans of snails will find a table rich with authentic Tuscan flavors.

Music, markets, and entertainment

The festival is about more than just food: every evening features live music, concerts, performances, and entertainment for all ages. The streets of the historic center host craft markets, including the historic ladle and onion fair, while the program is packed with briscola card tournaments, children's shows, a funfair, and special initiatives like the extemporaneous painting competition and the 'Notte Bianca' (White Night). Over the years, the festival has also hosted nationally renowned artists.

The Palio della Palla Tonchiata

The most heartfelt moment is the Palio della Palla Tonchiata, the closing event that recalls an ancient rivalry between Ambra and Bucine for control of the town. The challenge features the rioni (districts) of Ambra competing for the palio banner: it begins with a blessing, followed by a striking historical pageant accompanied by costumed flag-wavers, leading up to the main competition and the fireworks that light up the Valdambra night. It is a re-enactment that deeply connects the community to its roots.
