The savory Chianti fried dough celebrates in the blue district of Impruneta
In the town of Impruneta, set in the hills of the Florentine Chianti in the province of Florence (Tuscany), the Ficattola Festival is one of the most anticipated spring events. Organized by the Rione delle Sante Marieโthe 'blue district,' one of the local associations that bring the town to lifeโthe festival takes place in Piazza Attilio Bandinelli, known to locals as the 'Third Square.' For two intense weekends, the district transforms into a large open-air gastronomic village.
Ficattola is the name given to savory fried bread dough in many towns across the province of Florence, and specifically in Impruneta. Rolled thin with a rolling pin, cut into diamond shapes, and plunged into boiling oil, it becomes golden and fragrant. It is enjoyed plain, lightly salted, or stuffed: during the festival, both plain and filled ficattole are served, acting as the true stars of the event alongside classic Tuscan street food.
The Ficattola Festival is about more than just food. Each evening offers a different menu and entertainment. Highlights of the festival include:
The district festivals of Impruneta are part of the town's identity, which is also famous for its ancient terracotta tradition and the Grape Festival. The Ficattola Festival preserves the genuine spirit of a local district celebration: no frills, plenty of conviviality, affordable prices, and the pride of those who have been preparing their signature savory fritter for generations. It is the perfect opportunity to discover a simple, iconic flavor of Tuscany while immersed in the authentic atmosphere of a Florentine Chianti village.
The 2026 Ficattola Festival was spread over two weekends: the first from April 30 to May 3, the second from May 7 to 10, held in Piazza Attilio Bandinelli in Impruneta.
The festival opened on Thursday, April 30, with the murder mystery dinner "L'ultima scena" by the Compagnia degli Sporcelli. The program continued with a grilled meat lunch and a rock concert by Sbanebio (May 1st), a DJ set with Torx (May 2nd), and a brunch with acoustic music by the Maple Duo featuring beer pong (May 3rd). The second weekend featured karaoke with Lorenzo and Margherita (May 7th), an evening with Nedo & The Bello's (May 8th), the traditional suckling pig dinner with a 90s DJ set (May 9th), and finally, a buffet aperitif and the Rione delle Sante Marie talent show (May 10th).
The festival is held in Piazza Attilio Bandinelli (the 'Third Square') in the center of Impruneta (FI), in the Florentine Chianti.
By car from Florence, you can reach Impruneta in about 30 minutes via the SR222 (Chiantigiana) or the Impruneta exit of the A1 motorway. By bus, Impruneta is connected to Florence by regional suburban lines.
