Summer children's and family theatre festival in Pineto
Fiabe al Parco is one of the most enduring and beloved children's theatre festivals in Abruzzo. Every summer, throughout July and August, the festival transforms Pineto, a seaside town in the province of Teramo, into a large open-air stage dedicated to children and families. Established in the early 2000s, the event reaches its 22nd edition in 2026, confirming its status as a cornerstone of the Pineto summer season.
The event is conceived and curated by Teatro dei Colori, a historic Avezzano-based company specialising in youth theatre and children's productions. The artistic direction is led by Gabriele Ciaccia, who curates a programme each year that alternates between traditional fairy tales, puppet theatre, storytelling, and contemporary performance styles. The festival is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Pineto and supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Abruzzo Region. In case of bad weather, performances are moved to the town's multi-purpose centre theatre.
The heart of the festival is the Parco della Pace in Pineto, a large green space that welcomes the public on summer evenings. The festival also has an itinerant nature, bringing shows to local districts such as Scerne, Mutignano, and the Quartiere dei Poeti to reach the various communities of the municipality.
A different show is staged each week, typically starting at 9:15 PM. The programme ranges from classic fairy tales adapted for the stage to original productions by Teatro dei Colori, as well as guest performances from across Italy. The line-up features companies such as I Teatrini from Naples, Tieffeu from Perugia, Le Giravolte from Lecce, Arterie Teatro from Molfetta, La Gru Teatro from Fermo, and I Pupi di Stac from Florence, with stories featuring dragons, princesses, fantastic animals, and young heroes. There are also more contemporary offerings, such as circus-theatre shows accessible in Italian Sign Language (LIS).
With free admission and an open-air format, Fiabe al Parco is designed to introduce children to the theatre in an informal and relaxed setting where families can spend the evening together. The festival is one of the most iconic cultural events of the summer in Pineto and the entire Abruzzo coast, successfully combining entertainment, popular tradition, and educational value.
