The torta al testo cooked on embers and the DOC wines of the Colli Perugini, in the park of Villa Umbra
The Festa della Torta al Testo e dei Vini DOC dei Colli Perugini takes place in Pila, a hamlet of the Municipality of Perugia, and is one of the longest-standing and most deeply rooted festivals in the area. The star is the torta al testo, a typical Umbrian flatbread prepared with simple ingredientsโflour, water, baking soda, and saltโand cooked on a stone disc called a "testo", placed directly on the glowing embers of the hearth.
The torta al testo is enjoyed stuffed with cured meats, cheeses, sausage, or wild greens, in perfect pairing with the prized DOC wines of the Colli Perugini, the hills surrounding the Umbrian capital. The festival thus offers a journey into the most authentic flavours of peasant tradition, served at the food stalls set up in the green.
The event is held in the picturesque Parco dell'Arringatore (Arringatore Park) of Villa Umbra, which takes its name from the famous bronze statue of the Arringatore (the Orator), found in the countryside near Pila in 1567 and now preserved in Florence. Amidst music, dancing, and convivial evenings, the festival combines gastronomy, historical memory, and community celebration, confirming itself as a beloved summer event in the Perugino area.
The 2026 edition, the 47th, confirms the festival as one of the longest-running in the Perugino area. From June 26 to July 5, in the Parco dell'Arringatore of Villa Umbra in Pila, the food stalls serve the torta al testo cooked according to the original recipe on the red-hot stone slab, stuffed with cured meats, cheeses, sausage, and wild greens, paired with the DOC wines of the Colli Perugini. The evenings are enlivened by music and dancing.
Ten days of celebration, from June 26 to July 5, with food stalls open every evening.
The detailed evening program is published by the Pro Loco (local tourist board) of Pila in the days preceding the opening.
Pila is a hamlet southwest of Perugia, reachable by car in a few minutes from the city. The festival takes place in the Parco dell'Arringatore at Villa Umbra.
Free access to the festival area; food stalls are paid.
