About Sagra della Granocchia

In Capanne, a hamlet of Perugia, the Sagra della Granocchia is one of the longest-running and most beloved festivals in the area. For ten evenings, the festival celebrates the 'granocchia' โ€“ the local name for frogs โ€“ and typical local dishes, from Umbricelli alla Capannese to frog pulp tagliatelle, from fried frogs to stewed frogs. Gastronomy, art, folklore, music for dancing, sports, and popular games liven up this historic summer event.

One of the historic festivals in the Perugia area

The Sagra della Granocchia e dei Piatti Tipici Locali (Festival of Frogs and Typical Local Dishes) is held in Capanne, a hamlet of the Municipality of Perugia, located southwest of the provincial capital. Organized by the Pro Loco Capanne, it is one of the longest-standing events in the region and attracts visitors from all over the Perugia area every summer for ten evenings of gastronomy, folklore, and entertainment.

The 'granocchia' and traditional dishes

The absolute star is the granocchia, the name used in this area for frogs, prepared according to local recipes. Among the specialties served at the stalls:

  • Umbricelli alla Capannese, the typical fresh pasta of central Umbria in its local version
  • Tagliatelle with frog pulp
  • Fried frogs and stewed frogs
  • Local meats and cured meats

A part of the menu is also gluten-free, thanks to collaboration with AIC Umbria, to welcome those with celiac disease.

Art, folklore, music, and popular games

The Sagra della Granocchia is much more than a gastronomic festival: the program combines art and folklore, live music for dancing evenings, activities for children, sports moments, and traditional popular games that involve both adults and children. It is this variety that makes it a landmark event of the summer in Capanne and the entire municipality of Perugia.
