The historic fair of terracotta whistles and Piedmontese mixed boiled meat, in the heart of Moncalieri
The Fëra dij Subièt and His Majesty the Boiled Meat is one of the most deeply rooted events in the autumn calendar of Moncalieri, a city in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont. Its origins date back to 1286, when Amadeus V of Savoy granted the city the right to hold the fair as a reward for the loyalty of its subjects; in 1344, taxes were even suspended during the days of the festival. The current name was established in 1865, when the "subièt"—the terracotta whistles, in Piedmontese—became the symbol of the fair, initially a sign of popular dissent and later a festive attraction and collector's item.
The heart of the Fëra is twofold. On one hand, the terracotta whistles, an ancient Moncalieri craft product, are displayed and sold along the streets of the center and showcased in the Museo dij Subièt on Via Real Collegio, managed by the Circolo Culturale Saturnio. On the other, His Majesty the Boiled Meat, the famous Piedmontese mixed boiled meat cooked in a massive cauldron and served in the square: it is the iconic dish of the local gastronomic tradition, accompanied by traditional Savoyard sauces.
The event takes place over a weekend in October, spanning Borgo Navile, Piazza Martiri della Libertà, and the commercial streets of the center such as Via San Martino, Via Carlo Alberto, and Via Matteotti. The program alternates between gastronomic and folkloric moments:
With its period costumes, historical groups, and re-enactments of the 18th and 19th-century Savoyard court atmosphere, the Fëra dij Subièt is much more than a food festival: it is an identity-defining event that tells seven centuries of history of Moncalieri and Piedmont, attracting thousands of visitors from across the Province of Turin every year.
The Fëra dij Subièt and His Majesty the Boiled Meat returns to Moncalieri on Saturday, October 15, and Sunday, October 16, 2026. The event enlivens the historic center with artisanal stalls, the Masters of the Subièt, the extraordinary opening of the Museo dij Subièt, and the distribution of the famous Piedmontese mixed boiled meat cooked in the square.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times, themed dinners, and cultural initiatives, will be announced by the Pro Loco Moncalieri in the weeks leading up to the event. It is recommended to check the official Pro Loco channels for dinner reservations.
