About Feasts of Saint Onuphrius and Saint Anthony

Every June, the small village of Serramonacesca, nestled in the heart of the Majella National Park in the province of Pescara, celebrates its patron saints, Saint Onuphrius and Saint Anthony of Padua. This ancient festival is defined by evocative rituals: cross-shaped bonfires lit on the cliffside, a pilgrimage to the Hermitage of Saint Onuphrius with solemn mass and the blessing of water believed to be miraculous, and the traditional distribution of bread in honor of Saint Anthony. Faith, nature, and community intertwine over three days that reveal the most authentic soul of the Abruzzo mountains.

A patronal festival in the heart of the Majella

Every year in mid-June, the village of Serramonacesca—a small municipality in the province of Pescara lying at the foot of the Majella mountains in Abruzzo—gathers to honor its patron saints: Saint Onuphrius, celebrated on June 12th, and Saint Anthony of Padua, celebrated on June 13th. The Feasts of Saint Onuphrius and Saint Anthony are among the most significant religious events in the region, blending popular devotion, rural traditions, and the extraordinary natural backdrop of the Majella National Park.

The Hermitage of Saint Onuphrius

The heart of the festival is the Hermitage of Saint Onuphrius, a place of silence and spirituality carved into the rock at an altitude of approximately 725 meters, just a few kilometers from the village. Founded by Benedictine monks from the nearby Abbey of San Liberatore a Maiella, the hermitage utilizes the natural cavities of the cliff and houses the famous Cradle of Saint Onuphrius, a bed carved into the stone that tradition credits with healing powers: pilgrims lie upon it to pray for relief from stomach ailments and fevers.

The festival rituals

The program follows a ritual unchanged for generations:

  • On the evening of June 11th, the locals light the famous Fires of Saint Onuphrius: a large glowing cross, created with containers filled with bituminous material, is lit on the cliff near the hermitage and is visible from the entire village.
  • On the morning of June 12th, the saint's day, the faithful reach the hermitage along a steep path for solemn mass and a procession with the statue of the saint; many bathe in the spring believed to be miraculous.
  • In the afternoon, the blessing and distribution of the bread in honor of Saint Anthony takes place: the bread, offered by anonymous devotees, is collected, carried in baskets by local youths during a procession, blessed by the priest, and distributed house-to-house to the sound of the band.
  • June 13th is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, also venerated as the protector of field labor.

Legends and popular devotion

Centuries-old tales flourish around the festival. It is said that the original statue of Saint Onuphrius, if left in the village overnight, would return to the hermitage on its own; for this reason, a copy is carried in the procession today. The tradition of distributing bread is said to originate from a woman's vow who, after her son was healed, promised to distribute grain to the poor.

Festival, music, and community

Alongside the religious dimension, the Serramonacesca festival features social gatherings in Piazza della Libertà, where concerts and shows open to the entire community and visitors are held in the evenings. It is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in inland Abruzzo, its hospitality, and the flavors of the Majella mountain cuisine.
