The patronal festival of Serramonacesca featuring bonfires, a pilgrimage to the hermitage, and the blessing of bread
Every year in mid-June, the village of Serramonacesca—a small municipality in the province of Pescara lying at the foot of the Majella mountains in Abruzzo—gathers to honor its patron saints: Saint Onuphrius, celebrated on June 12th, and Saint Anthony of Padua, celebrated on June 13th. The Feasts of Saint Onuphrius and Saint Anthony are among the most significant religious events in the region, blending popular devotion, rural traditions, and the extraordinary natural backdrop of the Majella National Park.
The heart of the festival is the Hermitage of Saint Onuphrius, a place of silence and spirituality carved into the rock at an altitude of approximately 725 meters, just a few kilometers from the village. Founded by Benedictine monks from the nearby Abbey of San Liberatore a Maiella, the hermitage utilizes the natural cavities of the cliff and houses the famous Cradle of Saint Onuphrius, a bed carved into the stone that tradition credits with healing powers: pilgrims lie upon it to pray for relief from stomach ailments and fevers.
The program follows a ritual unchanged for generations:
Centuries-old tales flourish around the festival. It is said that the original statue of Saint Onuphrius, if left in the village overnight, would return to the hermitage on its own; for this reason, a copy is carried in the procession today. The tradition of distributing bread is said to originate from a woman's vow who, after her son was healed, promised to distribute grain to the poor.
Alongside the religious dimension, the Serramonacesca festival features social gatherings in Piazza della Libertà, where concerts and shows open to the entire community and visitors are held in the evenings. It is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in inland Abruzzo, its hospitality, and the flavors of the Majella mountain cuisine.
The 2026 patronal feasts of Serramonacesca confirmed the usual calendar: the lighting of the Fires of Saint Onuphrius on the hermitage cliff on the evening of June 11th, the pilgrimage and solemn mass at the Hermitage of Saint Onuphrius in the Majella National Park on June 12th, followed by the blessing and distribution of bread in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua.
Alongside the religious dimension, the musical event in Piazza della Libertà took place: on the evening of Friday, June 12th, 2026, at 9:30 PM, the village hosted a stop of the traveling festival Terzacorsia - La musica che gira intorno, with a live show that was free and open to all.
Serramonacesca can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Alanno-Scafa exit) or the A14 (Pescara-Chieti exit), following signs for the Majella National Park. The Hermitage of Saint Onuphrius can be reached on foot from Contrada Brecciarola with a short walk of about 25 minutes along an easy path.
The celebrations take place between June 11th and 13th, with the main events on the 12th (Saint Onuphrius) and the 13th (Saint Anthony).
The festival and religious celebrations are free and open to everyone.
