Manoppello celebrates the Sacred Veil on the Feast of the Transfiguration with a novena, procession, and pilgrims from around the globe
The Solemnity of the Holy Face is the most historic and defining event for Manoppello, a village in the province of Pescara, Abruzzo, nestled at the foot of the Maiella mountains. Every year on August 6thโthe day the Church celebrates the Transfiguration of the Lordโthe local community and thousands of pilgrims gather around the Holy Face, the famous veil of sea silk bearing an acheiropoieton (an image not made by human hands) of Christ's face, kept by the Capuchin Friars in the Basilica of the Holy Face.
The Holy Face is a delicate veil measuring approximately 17x24 centimeters, displaying a male face with a beard and long hair. It is identical on both sides and contains no traces of pigment, which is why it is considered acheiropoieton. According to tradition, the relic arrived in Manoppello in 1506 and was entrusted to the Capuchins in 1638. They continue to guard it in the sanctuary, formerly the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and now a minor basilica. The sanctuary is a destination for pilgrims from all over the world, drawing believers, clergy, and scholars during the week of the festival.
The Solemnity is preceded by a long period of preparation: the novena begins on July 27th and continues until August 4th, followed by the triduum from August 2nd to 4th and the consecration of children. The highlight days are August 5th and 6th, which are particularly intense and filled with liturgical events. The most anticipated moment is the procession of the Holy Face, when the relic leaves the basilica to be carried through the streets of the town, accompanied by prayer and song, before returning to the sanctuary.
Beyond its spiritual dimension, the festival enlivens the entire village. Food stalls are set up near the basilica, and live music performances take place, while local bars and businesses welcome visitors. The Solemnity of the Holy Face is one of the most significant religious events in the Manoppello summer and the entire Abruzzo calendar, blending centuries-old devotion with the warmth of a community in celebration.
The 2026 Solemnity of the Holy Face is part of the official summer events calendar of the Municipality of Manoppello. Celebrations will take place on Wednesday, August 5th, and Thursday, August 6th, at the Basilica of the Holy Face, including religious ceremonies, food stalls, and live music. August 6th, the Feast of the Transfiguration, remains the heart of the solemnity with the solemn mass and the traditional procession of the relic. Preparation begins on July 27th with the novena and continues with the triduum from August 2nd to 4th.
The detailed program of religious and secular festivities for the 2026 edition will be published by the Sanctuary in the weeks leading up to the festival via the official poster. The traditional structure includes:
