The SS. Crocifisso Festival is the most deeply felt religious and popular celebration in Roccapalumba, a small village in the Metropolitan City of Palermo nestled in the Sicani Mountains, in the Torto Valley. Every year, around August 13th, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in an event that weaves together devotion, tradition, and public festivities.
The heart of the festival is the solemn procession of the venerated statue of the SS. Crocifisso, which is carried through the village streets inside a fine wooden canopy, an authentic masterpiece of local craftsmanship. The day of August 13th opens at dawn with the alborata (morning wake-up call) in Contrada Cannoli, followed by the brass band performing through the town center and Eucharistic celebrations in the Mother Church. In the afternoon, the statue travels through the village accompanied by the faithful, authorities, and the sound of the band, in an atmosphere of intense popular participation.
Alongside the religious program, the festival offers a rich entertainment lineup. The secular festivities begin as early as August 11th with "The Night of the Artists", an evening dedicated to street performers, including jugglers, fire shows, sand art, and illusionism. During the festival days, there are light music concerts, cabaret, and evening shows in the square, culminating in the traditional fireworks display in Contrada Cannoli, which lights up the Sicani sky. Over the years, the Roccapalumba stage has hosted numerous artists from the Italian music scene.
The SS. Crocifisso Festival is part of the summer program "Summer in the Village of the Stars", which highlights the town's astronomical vocation. Roccapalumba is known as the "Village of the Stars" thanks to its modern astronomical observatory and the optimal conditions for sky observation offered by the Sicani Mountains. During the summer, the village also hosts the Night of San Lorenzo with a Star Party and tastings of local products, the Peter Pan Day for children, and numerous cultural initiatives. Visiting Roccapalumba during the patronal feast means discovering the most authentic inland Sicily, made of living traditions, hospitality, and starry skies.
The 2026 SS. Crocifisso Festival in Roccapalumba will renew, according to tradition, the devotion to the patron saint around August 13th. The official dates and the complete program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. The usual highlights of the festival are expected: the alborata in Contrada Cannoli, the brass band through the village streets, celebrations at the Mother Church, the procession of the venerated statue in the wooden canopy, and the final fireworks display. For the detailed schedule, it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Roccapalumba.
